i will write prt 1 soon but i heard the may prt 2 had a national failure rate of 19% and tuspm's failure rate was 25%. Isnnt that a LOT? Aren't most people screwed and not able to start residency if they fail part 2? Does anybody know what the pass/fail rate is for part 1?

For the part 1 boards, you need to look at the first time pass rates, not the overall. A few schools (usually the ones with crappy pass rates) fudge their numbers by tellings applicants the overall pass rate and not the TRUE first time pass rate.

I believe the overall overage for first time pass rate last year was 82%. I believe temple was about 85% but I may be wrong. AZPOD, Scholl, DMU, and I believe NYCPM were all above the average as well.

Not sure about CSPM, Barry, and Ohio...but some schools have to be below average and bring the numbers down.

DMU has been at 95% the last two years on part 2. I haven't heard about what the rate was for our class this year, but so far everyone I have spoken to in my class has passed. Also to answer your question, yes if you do not pass part two bords you most often will lose your residency spot. I do know a studetn who did not pass last year when the test was administerd in May and again in March and he lost his spot and had to sit the year out and reapply the following year.

This is my understanding as well.^

There are a few residencies that allow for people who haven't passed boards, but the vast majority will not let you start the program.

A student could potentially get two chances at pt2 before they start residency, though... March and May before graduation.

From what I saw as a student, there are usually issues with part two because a lot of students blow it off. Students are about to match, graduate, and have usually been touring the USA on externships. A lot of times, they just don't put enough time in and count on their knowledge base. This can be a huge mistake because, unless you know the "buzz words", you could be in trouble.

It happened to a few of my friends that basically said, "I've had great rotations and learned a lot. I'll be fine." That turned out not to be the case. But, they busted their butts for a month, re-took the test and passed.

I guess the moral of the story is not to blow off part II!
