i am highly considering anesthesia due to the acute patient contact and instant management of the patient rather than continuity of care. I was just wondering are there any programs in the northeast or midwest that consider board scores with the cutoff at 200 and above. Forgot to mention i am a US IMG; thanks alot

from what i know, gas is getting more competitive. i dont even know if a board score below 220 will land you a decent gas program. this goes for img's. my only advice is that study hard and try to get above a 220 on step 2, setup a nice anesthesia rotation where they have a residency program. even if you dont like that program, atleast getting a nice lor from the pd, chair, or attending will help you a lot for the match. regarding research...i honestly dont know how or what significance it can have for the match. since you're going for 2005, try to finish step 2 by july...set up that elective...or better...two..starting august. that way you can have a decent lor in by opening day or before the end of september. the earlier you set up that elective the better chance of getting more than one lor into the match. i think two nice lors from 2 different programs would carry you farther than a decent board score. i applied for for rads this year and didnt match (as expected)..but i also didnt have any rads lors when i applied. because i took step 2 and csa so late (october of 2003), i started my electives late in the season (december) and couldnt get a good lor into the match in time to have any significance. but now i have two decent lors (both from chairs) with a third one (from a pd) on the way. both programs assured me that these will strengthen my application significantly when i apply again this fall, added to the fact that i will be applying as a prelim med intern rather than a MSIV. this is just my advice...i have nothing to fortify it with unless i ever get rads. regarding programs, if you can apply to ny and cali then im sure you can find a handful of middle tier gas programs that would atleast interview you. especially in ny. my advice is apply for every program on the east coast. so, good luck and pm if you have more questions. take care.

Ahhhh.... going for GAS now 😉

Well, from some of the research I have done (out of desire to try to get GAS) .... as an US-IMG to be competitive for gas you need to score in the mid to high 80's on both steps just to be a competitive applicant. Of course, scores are not the only factor in obtaining a residency, PD's tend to look at numerous things from your P.S, LOR's, and US clinical experience. In your case, you have gotten excellent US clinical experience via the 5th pathway, but if you are interested in GAS you should do a couple of electives in GAS to get a couple of strong LOR's to boost up your application and CV. Well, if you want more details ... just email me or PM !

Take care.

In terms of unfilled spots, this year was less competitive than last year(89 of 1289 spots compared to 53 of 1264 in '03). I dont know about the competitiveness of the applicants in the pool or the number of applicants though.

I'm a US-IMG graduate. I scored a 90 (223) on Step 1, did poorly on Step 2..79 (191). I received 12 interviews, some of them from respectable programs. I did an away rotation at a prominent, well-known program in NYC and got a good LOR out of it. I matched at my second choice....Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in a sweet part of Chicago. Although the program isn't well-known, the PD is famous in anesthesia circles and has written numerous textbooks. Evidently, he can get you nice fellowships such as pain med at Stanford. Perhaps you should consider this program...

hey drlee, you matched for 2005? i also know a grad from my old school that is finishing his 1st year in gas there. he says he's pretty satisfied with the program there. being 2 blocks away from masonic myself, i totally agree with you on the location. congrats! pm me when you have time. take care.

i would definitely try an elective before you're dead set. i was kind of gunning for gas as well during my 3rd year cores but when i did the elective in gas....i just couldnt find it as stimulating. not to mention the daily little political drama between the gas guys and the surgeons. well, this is just my obeservation from a low key gas elective in a community hospital. it could totally be a different experience in a nice greenbook location. definitely try an elective though before you apply. take care.
