Just got my score back this week. Surprise of all surprises I got a pathetic 212. I had been expecting something over 230. I want to go back to California for residency, my home state. But now I'm completely hopeless about my chances.

I'm interested in Probably IM. Nothing too competitive.

What can I do to increase my chances besides the expected like step2 and 3rd year grades? Well, pertaining to those areas what step2 score would help offset my horrible step1?

Do I even have a chance at returning to california, ideally the coast where my family all live? Or should I just how up now and re order my preferences?

It would probably help to post this in the IM forum.

I would look at returning to CA as a multiple year project. Instead of looking to CA for residency, look at it as returning to CA when you are an attending.

It might work out better for you since you will have a higher income to offset the expense of living in CA. Plus, you get to see more of the country. (End of happy pep talk)

Lol 212 is not bombing step 1.

Sub 200 is bombing step 1.

Are you going to match at big name university programs in SF/LA/SD? No.

Can you still match at smaller community programs or at UC-Davis/UCSF-Fresno? Maybe.

Worst case scenario you might end up in Arizona or Nevada which is only a few hours drive from SoCal.

Chill out.

See http://forums.studentdoctor.net/thr...re-back-today-and-bombed-it-any-hope.1084324/ for a whole thread about the same situation specifically in the context in IM. Same score even.

Long story short to summarize my post in that thread: I had a practically identical score and got 12 interviews for IM in CA. And I didn't even apply to some of the crappier programs. Stop worrying about it, focus on 3rd year grades, try do better on step 2.

I went to the Family Med match panel at my school this spring. One student got a 195 on Step1. In a panic, that person applied to 40 programs.

They got 35 interview offers to a huge variety of places, including attractive programs in San Diego.

I know you said IM not FM, but if the true goal is residency in coastal Califormia near family, then there are many paths open to you.
