I know that forming a bond releases energy. But does breaking a bond store energy.

Ex. ATP + H20 --> ADP + Pi

H20 breaking ATP forms ADP and Pi which releases energy.
How does joining ADP and Pi store energy when a concept states that forming releases energy and breaking stores energy.

hm, I've never thought of energy as being "stored" when you break a bond. this is the way I think of it: energy is required to break a bond, ie., it always "costs" you energy to break a bond. the reason that energy is released when a bond is *formed* is that the bond formation creates a lower energy state. so when you *break* a bond, you're going from a more stable condition(the bonded state) to a less-stable condition (two atoms or molecules floating around individually).you're now at a higher energy, or less energetically-favorable, state
