Hey all.... just wondering what some of the other interns are planning to do about books. My understanding is that Tintanelli, Rosen, and Roberts & Hedges are all coming out with new editions later this year (Sept/Oct).

Any suggestions or info?

Don't buy until you are sure what goodies your program gives out for free. Many places offer a major text for year one. I made a point to read alot of Tintinalli over the past year, and it's OK. I find that alot of the chapters seem to go into detailed nonsense that doesn't seem relevent to EM. Other chapters are great. I read as much as I had time for as I rotated through intern year. No good experience with the other texts yet.

Tintinalli is indeed coming out with a new text in October... the 6th edition.

Rosen came out with a next text a year or so ago? Its pretty nice.

Our program (USF/Tampa General) isn't paying for our books, so we are scrambling to get drug reps to pay for it... it doesn't look promising. And we HAVE to have them by July, and they won't be using the new text whatsoever, so we're screwed.

Tintinalli's is pretty good... I read Rosen's during my 3rd and 4th year (helped a lot in my FP rotations too) and thought that it was real good, very in depth in the pathophys, and one EM attending told me (if you know the pathophys, you're ten steps ahead of everyone else).

Q, DO

Yep, Tintinelli is coming out with a new edition late in the year while Rosen had a new edition last year.
I got Roberts and Hedges las year...but regardless, you should get ONE of the above AND Roberts and Hedges. Not are they wonderful to have as references, but they are the textbooks of EM (like Harrison's and Cecil are for IM).

Personally, I have Rosen, a pocket Tintinalli, PEPID on my palm and a Roberts and Hedges (and the Atlas of EM), I have felt pretty complete in residency so far.
