Quite often, us soon-to-be first years receive this huge packet of books that they want us to buy. But what I've found is that even though each school may give a different list, many medical students study from the same set of books. So we should start reviewing books that we have found quite helpful. I am in no position to review a book, but I'll start it off by asking if someone can review:

1. Physiology by Costanzo: http://www.campusi.com/prod.pl?cat=...us&currency=usd&zip=&nw=y&limit=10&use_ajax=1

2. Lippincott's Illustrated Reviews: Biochemistry http://www.lww.com/product/?978-0-7817-6960-0

1) Costanzo Physiology was very, very popular at my school and basically no one used the courses recommended text. However, the way our class was graded and tested was ridiculous, and I found the only way to do well was read the lecturer's notes that he posted. However, I used BRS: Physio, which is also written by Costanzo for rapid review (you're going to want to probably get this book for Step 1)

2) We also used Lippincott Biochem. I personally thought this book was a good book. The bullet point paragraphs for each pathway is good, the diagrams are easy to follow, and topics are well arranged throughout the book. The book does a good job of including clinically relevant diseases throughout, but it's too thick to use for Step 1 review (in my opinion).

Costanzo is excellent, and probably will prepare you well for the boards. Be prepared for the oolie situation though. In our case, the textbook they wanted us to use was by one of the faculty. When it came to GI stuff, it had some extra stuff about appetitie suppression hormones that they guy had done a bunch of research on. Not in Constanza, but covered on the exam. However, you could easily check this book out from the library. I still need to go read it half a year later.

lippincott - great concept maps. surprisingly its considered a review book but its too long and overkill for step1 prep.
use it along with class

costanzo - nicely written and easy to digest. makes concepts pretty easy to understand and follow.

both i highly recommend
