Books on Teamwork and Communication

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Does anyone have recommendations for books on teamwork and/or communication that would be useful in a medical setting?

Rule #1: I'm the boss. Listen to me.
Rule #2: See Rule #1.

You don't need a book for that. This trend of reducing the leadership and autonomy of the physician--and turning it over to nurses--is crap and bad for patients.

Then books on effective team leadership and communication skills of leaders is pertinent.

I haven't read these books but they are on my list, as advised by one of my former attendings:
- Tribal Leadership
- Getting to Yes
- Crucial Conversations

Maybe one of these will help you.

Crucial Conversations
Primal Leadership
It's Your Ship

For negotiating there are a couple that espouse different tactics for different situations
Getting to Yes - for maintaining relationships
The Power of No - for getting the best deal in one-offs

As a doctor in training, you're going to see a lot of less effective leadership styles. We are trained to find faults - in patients, in ourselves, in our teammates. Outside of academia, the job is significantly less hierarchical and we typically underappreciate and under recognize the contributions of our staff. If you get in the habit of genuinely recognizing someone you work with every shift, you'd be amazed what it does for your work environment.

The single best thing you could do to improve teamwork and communication is to learn the names of everyone you work with and start using them regularly.
