I was wondering if anyone knew a good fictional book that talked about medicine/ the life of a doctor. I think it would be a good way to learn some information, even if it might not be completely true, or won't help me at all. Thanks in advance!

I think the ones people recommend most are Atul Gawande's Complications and Better and Samuel Shem's House of God, though that last one, I'm told, is a little risqué.

I have read House of God which gets pretty sexual at times but a good book, Becoming a Doctor at Harvard Medical School which explains different aspects of her life/experience going through medical school which is also a good book! 🙂

To go by your request, Arrowsmith by Sinclair Lewis. It's a fictional story about a young doctor and follows him through his medical career. The novel is dated now since it was published in the 1920s but can still be found at most libraries because the author won the Pulitzer Prize for it.

If you want nonfiction, it can be expanded to the many medical memoirs that are recommended ad nauseam on SDN (Gawande, Carson, etc.)

Intern Blues

Intern Blues was a good read, also Hot Lights Cold Steel was an interesting one that a read a year or two ago

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll be sure to read them. 🙂

look at the end of the "book of medical diseases" thread-you will find more suggestions there

House of God is a good read, but it is almost depressing to hear some of the things he has to say when you're a wide-eyed innocent pre-med 😀

On Call in Hell is a good book written by a DO who goes to Iraq with a Marine unit as a battalion surgeon. He talks about 'forward medicine', an inventive way of saving lives on the battlefield. A good read for anyone who's thinking about taking a military scholarship for school, as well.
