Thinking of living between Boston and Providence near Foxborough/Mansfield/Sharon. Anyone have experience around these areas? How was the commute? Google maps say about 37-40 min commute from Foxborough to Boston. I'm well aware snow and rush hour will be hell but probably going to be in the hospital at 6-6:30am and leave at like 6:30-7pm at night so hopefully will avoid prime rush hour.

Is there a reason you would want to have such a long commute? When you are tired and post call, are you going to be very excited about such a long drive? I always wanted to be within about a 15-20 minute drive of the hospital from med school, through residency, and now with my job. You won't have much of a chance to go out with your fellow residents since it's not a short trip home afterwards. That extra 30-60 minute or longer drive adds up to less time you get to yourself, including to sleep.

Thanks everyone. Reason I'm looking there is because my better half will working in Providence

SO should take commuter rail if they are not doing residency or working a medical job. Boston highways and infrastructure is very different from other states because it is so old and overcapacity. I guarantee you that with any amount of traffic a commute from Foxborough to Boston will be closer to an hour.

you would be going WITH traffic both ways...and 630a the traffic has already started to back up...a 30 min drive with NO traffic (i.e. going to the airport at 5am) can turn, near rush hour (which is more like 6-9a and 4-8p) into a 1-1/2 to 2 hour commute(and this is mass pike no side street)...the morning might not be that bad...but the afternoon...most definitely a miserable drive.

as maxxor said, if your SO is not a resident, then the commuter rail from boston to providence would be much better (you could do the same and live in providence)...

As others have said, horrible idea. You will detest life more than other interns if you choose such a commute in a city like Boston.

It will be at least an hour and a lot of stress, particularly in the winter. Getting in and out of the city on route 9, I-90, or I-93 during rush hour is not fun. Live closer, your SO will have a reverse commute or can take the train. Lots of people do that.
