I just found out I need orthodontic therapy. How do you think having braces will affect interviewers' perceptions of me? Should I go with metal or ceramic? I'm leaning towards the metal ones due to the staining and limitations of the ceramic braces. Plus, I think ceramic braces look like you are doing a bad job of trying to hide your braces. On the other side, is it more socially acceptable for an adult in ortho to have ceramic braces?

Opinions, anyone?

I'd go with metal for sure-- As a matter of fact, when I found out that I needed braces in January that is exactly what I did. Metal brackets look very clean and are much more durable. You hit the nail on the head re: ceramic braces making people look like they are trying to hide their braces. Not to mention they seem to discolor or make your teeth look extremely yellow after only a few months of wear.
Hopefully I get my braces off before dental school, as it will be a huge pain to resume orthodontic treatment at or near the dental school I end up at come December of next year (as originally projected).

I agree. It's ultimately up to you, but whenever I think of ceramic braces, I remember this girl I knew in middle school whose smile always looked so.. gummy. I don't really know how to describe it; it kind of looked like she had mini teeth on top of her teeth. Plus, I remember my orthodontist telling me that ceramic braces may take a couple more months than metal, so that might be your push.

Go with metal, ceramic just look ridiculous in my opinion. You're getting interviewed by fellow DDS's and the like...they won't care. If anything it might be a conversation piece, haha.

if you're applying right now, i'd wait to get them until after the interviews if you think it might make your nervous or something.

Why don't you just go with invisalign?

is invisalign an option?

Invisalign is not an option. My condition is more skeletal than tooth position. I am also seeing a periodontist before deciding because recession is also a concern. If I need to have gum grafting before braces, I may not even have the braces during interviews. Thanks, everyone, for your input!

You're applying to DENTAL school lol

I don't see how having braces could possibly be a problem?

If anything I think it would be a plus, since it shows you care about your oral health.

I'm getting braces *IN* dental school. You might want to wait 'cause you will probably get a discount wherever you go, and your orthodontist will be right there for you whenever you may need any adjustment (no waste of time).

Having braces during your dental school interviews will not hurt you! If anything it will give you something to talk about- your recent experience in the dentist/ortho chair as a patient. I'm in my 30's and have had my braces for almost 2 yrs now. After a couple of weeks, you really don't notice them anymore.
