I am a pre medical student. I have to choose a stream for me. I am a bit confused between the two i.e Brain Surgery & Heart Surgery.
Which of these should I opt for ? 😕😕

Thank you
.🙂

I think you should do oral maxillofacial surgery, but that's just my opinion.

You already made a mistake by being a pre-med student....so its a total lost case😀no matter where you go its all the same😉

First of all, you're talking about neurosurgery and cardio/cardiothoracic surgery. Or you could be talking about transplant surgery in the heart case. Or even trauma surgery in other cases.

The route you take to pursue these is quite different. Here's a little basic insight, though:

Almost all surgeons work insane hours, but neurosurgeons are particularly bad. Neurosurgery is a very competitive 7-year residency. Cardiothoracic surgery is a very uncompetive 2-year fellowship following a 5-year basic surgery residency.

Neurosurgery also has insanely high malpractice insurance rates.

In either of these specialties you will spen most of your time doing the same procedures over and over, so you'd want to look at which one interests you more.

In neuro, you will likely be working on the spinal cord in addition to the brain. If you do cardiothoracic, you'll be responsible for the lungs, as well.

Neurosurgery is much more competitive and pays better, but the lifestyle is worse.

Cardiothoracic surgery has been on a decline since cardiologists are now able to perform procedures that have greatly reduced the need for cardiothoracic surgery. Thus, it is not difficult to get a cardiothoracic fellowship.

This is something I've thought about a lot, and I don't have an answer for me, so I certainly don't have one for you. Those are just a few of my considerations. My advice - focus on getting into med school, THEN worry about specialty choices (if you MUST worry).

Disclaimer: These are my opinions and understandings - I am not ALWAYS correct.

It's a little early to be attemping to "choose" anything. After you have been through a couple of clinical rotations, you have a better idea of what you like and don't like. Otherwise, head on over to your public library and do some research (good practice) on these two professions.

I could begin by saying that this is not a decision you have to make now, but the truth is that this is a decision that you SHOULD ABSOLUTELY NOT make now. You do not "have to choose a stream" for yourself at this point. You really really do not. Don't let anyone make you think that, most especially yourself. People change and you will not have the tools to make this decision until you have spent MANY hours examining both the surgical and medical sides of medicine.

Now, the best thing you can do if you are interested in these areas is to browse the internet or a local library for more information on both (neurosurgery and cardiac or cardiothoracic surgery). Then you should find surgeons in each area who would be interested in having you shadow them. You are not expected to know for sure when you start medical school. I wanted to be a neurosurgeon when I started but now that I am about to graduate my aim is to go into primary care! You have a lot of growing and changing to do before you have to make this choice.

have you been accepted to med school yet?

edit: what does "i have to choose a stream" mean?

My advice is to do both! Why tie yourself down with one surgical specialty!?!

Seriously if you're asking this you have no idea what it truly means to do either.

Best advice I've gotten from a thoracic surgeon for such a decision (even though it's not neccessary to choose now):

Choose a speciality based on the disease not the procedure. Surgery is changing rapidly and many procedures may change or be unneccessary in the future, so make sure you love curing the disease you choose whether it may mean cutting out a tumor with invasive surgery or killing it with focused radiation (as an example).

So if brain diseases interest you more go neurosurgery, if heart diseases do go that directoin.

But at this point everything will probably seem interesting I'm going to guess.

If you have no experience shadowing in either it needs to be your first step.

Open yourself up to all the great possibilities in medicine. 80% of us will change our minds once we get into medical school.

Without doing rotations, there is no way to make an educated decision on a specialty. If you have an interest in both CT & NSG, do rotations in each.

Well, one is brain, and the other is heart. The organs are quite different. 😛

That kind of depends. What's the difference between the two organ thingees?

Oh man, you are already pre-med? Too late. You need to decide in middle school.

Seriously, I would worry more about getting in and passing your classes until third year. I decided 1 month before completing my residency applications.

His post has "troll" written all over it.

How? High post count and a very reasonable question for where he is at in his education.

Thanks everyone for replying me. 🙂🙂

After going through all the comments I feel Brain Surgery will be a better option.

Is this a good decission ? 🙄🙄

Yes. You could be the first to attempt a self operation.

I know brain is one part of our body which is not 100% explored by doctors. It would be really a big challenge.

Apparently being a creative troll proved to be a big challenge for you. Next time bring something new to the table please!

Can anyone tell me more about oral maxillofacial surgery.

Thank you !!!

I think you should forget all surgery except for Boob surgery, that is truley the only fulfilling position out there.

Which are the best universities in the US for brain surgery. Where placement chances are also really high.

Brain surgeons must come from Harvard, if you cant get into there, your dreams are shattered.

First, you should hone your skills in horticulture. Once you develop them to the point where are able to create as fine detail as this horticulturist, you will be know enough anatomical detail to achieve your goals and make an impression on all who experience your work.

How about deciding when to take the MCAT first?

I have planned to take it in the next scheduled.

Stewart University. Apparently they have a huge success rate for brainiacs.

You should go for something more realistic like plastics or ortho

this is exactly why they make fun of us in every other forum.

Dear NJDIF thier is no one making fun of anyone here. Its just a discussion hapening. And I feel its a really healthy discussion.

go into derm. CT and neurosurgery will both be heavily socialized in the near future....👎

That's the most ignorant thing I've ever heard.

You necro-bumped a 4-year-old thread to post a useless comment? And you're calling someone else ignorant.... Right.... You're a complete joke with nothing better to do.
