Just found out about a brand new clinical science program from the Division 12 Email List.

How long will it take this program to be APA accredited? Will the first batch of students graduate without accreditation? Any thoughts on the pros/cons of attending a brand new program? Think it will be fully funded? Some of the faculty listed are pretty decent. I'm not really interested (no research match) but thought I would post this in case it appeals to other SDNers.

Here is the info:

CLINICAL SCIENCE IN CHILD AND ADOLESCENT
PSYCHOLOGY AT FLORIDA INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY,
MIAMI, FLORIDA
Overview
The Department of Psychology at Florida International University has a new doctoral
specialization: The
Clinical Science program in Child and Adolescent Psychology!
In Spring 2010 the Clinical Science Faculty will be reviewing applications to admit its
first class for
Fall 2010. We anticipate accepting approximately 4 to 6 graduate students.
Goals
Our program’s emphasis is on
science and underscores our commitment to applying
scientific evidence to further the design, implementation, and evaluation of assessment,
prevention, and treatment procedures for use with children from infancy to adolescence.
We encourage applicants to consider our program only if they are interested in pursuing
an academic or research career. Our program is a mentor-based program in which
students apply to work with individual faculty.
Strengths of FIU Clinical Science
FIU’s Clinical Science in Child and Adolescent Psychology specialization has the
strength of having core faculty in areas that represent each of the major problem areas of
childhood and adolescence, including ADHD, anxiety, conduct problems, depression and
suicidal behaviors, and risky problem behaviors. More than 8 million dollars in annual
federal funding is currently held by clinical faculty.
Facilities
Located on the Modesto A. Maidique Campus, the Psychology Department’s Clinical
Science Program in Child and Adolescent Psychology is located with the FIU Center for
Children and Families in an interdisciplinary center focused on clinical research in child
and adolescent mental health, in the Health and Life Sciences Building. Faculty from
departments and schools across the university are affiliated with the program through the
Institute for Child Health and Development.

How to Apply
To make certain that they have a good match with a mentor and to ensure that the faculty
member is taking students this year, interested students should send an email to faculty
with whom they are interested in working, along with a description of their interests and
career goals and a resume attached. In addition, prospective students should go to the
FIU University Graduate School website (http://gradschool.fiu.edu) and click “Graduate
Admissions.” Please follow the application process that is requested. Please
do not apply directly to the Director of Clinical Training.

I think a programs has to have its first class graduate first. Then they can apply for accredidation.

I did some google research.

I found this on Georgia Southern website. Here is the direct link to the PDF http://class.georgiasouthern.edu/psychology/subpages/prospectivestudents.pdf

"As a new program, the earliest we are able to apply for accreditation is when the first class of doctoral students enters their final year in the program. We estimate that this year will be 2011. This allows the accrediting agency, the American Psychological Association (APA), to review the full curriculum following a full cycle of implementation. This process will also allow the first
graduating class of doctoral students the opportunity to graduate from an accredited program."

According to the FIU Clinical Science website http://casgroup.fiu.edu/cscap/pages.php?id=281
"Following American Psychological Association (APA) accreditation guidelines, we anticipate that our Clinical Science Program will receive accreditation as a clinical program when the first class graduates. We also anticipate becoming a member of the Academy of Psychological Clinical Science."
