Is it really true that BGW only interviews 100 people for their 70 intern positions or is the Freida info just a typo? I mean it is a very prestigious institution, but even MGH interviews 400!!!!

I am not sure of the exact numbers but when I was there last year, they did not have the cattle car feel of many of the other programs interview days. Also, expect that multiple people will have read your file and are familar with it that aren't interviewing you (i.e. Katz, Wolff, etc) While others might disagree, I am pretty sure from talking to various PDs and high ups at BWH that it is the most selective program in the country so it is not suprising that BWH is interviewing fewer applicants than MGH. That being said people will get lots of love from the BWH and get cold shouldered from other top programs, similarly you might find that there are one or more programs that fit you better than BWH even if you are offered the chance to match there.
The final thing that I will say about BWH,not being a resident there, is that we all work very hard in the big medicine programs and while some programs are very up front about how much sleep and how long hours their interns are working (see JHU), I would ask around and understand that 80 (+) hours is a lot and my experience from talking to people in the BWH is that they work as hard if not harder and longer hours than most other training programs.

The stats quoted at the interview was that "about half of you can match here". That would make for at least 140 applicants necessary. I am guessing more like 300+

If you want to be an elitist, you can consider that they are equally competing with MGH, JHU, and UCSF. Then there are the "regional" powerhouses like Duke, Wash U, Penn, U W, Columbia, etc. So you figure that they would need to interview at least 3 applicants for every position. That would be a minimal of about 200. That is still risky business.

I know last year, MGH got 4500 applications, interviewed 400, and there are 70 peops who matched there. My guess is that is about standard.

Well, I think the rumors have gotten a little out of control. I am a current resident at the Brigham and will try to clarify things a little.
1. While the Brigham is very selective, we interview far more than 100 people for our 70 spots. Probably in the 300's range based upon data given to us at a recent housestaff meeting. I don't really know how many people MGH and other very selective programs interview but we are not far off the norm for these super competitive places. Thus depending on how the match goes, at least 1/3 of those who interview have a great shot at matching here.
2. As residents we work very hard at the Brigham. However, data collected anonymously each month indicates that 99% of people meet work hour requirements every month. Our revised call system is overnight Q4 for interns and late night (10PM) Q4 for residents. This provides increased autonomy for interns. They are covered by night float overnight once the residents leave. In addition, the faculty, leadership and my colleagues are incredibly supportive while working. It is like a family here where people are looking out for each other and really trying to help anyone in need. However, the reputation that the Brigham is a cushier place than the other super-competitive places is probably false. No matter what you hear, these top places really push their house staff. I just think the Brigham takes care of their people better than anyone else. I have a biased opinion though🙂
3. In terms of the match, I do not know how far down we went on our list, nor do I think anyone could know this about any program except the PDs themselves. Certainly no one advertises the info. The top 5 places basically compete for the same 200-300 people. Thus, all years are probably different. Each year I think our intern class is amazing, not just based on their credentials, but in their personality and attitude. I would pick this place again in a heart beat. I bet most people here feel the same way.

Thanks for the clarifications. I apologize for a post that seemed obsessive, I was just "shocked" that they would only have to interview 100 people for 70 spots (that's what is posted on FREIDA), as there is a significant overlap in applications among the "powerhouses of medicine," as you guys stated. 🙂

Where do BWH residents live? How much are the different bedroom/bathroom options?
