I don't know if it its the weed or what, but I came up with this epiphany.

Since the USMLE-1 exam is curved, if we can get every 2nd year student to decide on a number of questions to get right, say 100 out of I think 350 questions, and we will all end up with the same score. That way, we will all get the same score and residency programs won't be able to discriminate between us based on board scores. Its brilliant.

If that doesn't work we can just make spit balls to annoy the hell out of other examinee's on exam day.

Man I am messed up

You're plan won't work because there will be at least someone who will pretent to go along but then try to ace the exam.

I would be that someone, mostly because I enjoy deflating stoners.

Why'd you have to foil my plan? I was going for a 320.

If you could do this, couldn't you just "decide" to get 250 right instead?

at least several hundred 😀

are u kidding me...we can't even get a group of 150 students in my class to do that such that we all could have some breathing room...everyone is freakin intense and tries to get as many questions as possible right on a test which skews up the curve so high that you're guaranteed to fail if you slack...may be you could introduce this plan to your classmates and see if they'd agree and go from there...

Shangal: OK, here's what you should do -- YOU can do that and assume that everyone else will too!! You might be starting a revolution!!!

This would not necessarily work even if everyone followed your plan exactly. For example, on the SAT and on the MCAT, 2 students can get the exact same number of questions right and get different scores due to the difficulty level of various questions. It's possible a similar idea is used for USMLE scoring. However, if a number of people were able to determine the exact number of questions they got right and then correlate that information to their score, you have right there the formula for USMLE scoring!

Nevermind whether people would even follow this plan-

How can you ensure that you get exactly 250 right? For the questions you have no idea on; how can you avoid guessing the right answer?

By leaving those questions blank.

Actually given teh large number of test takers it would be easier for everyone to simply chose A for every answer, which should in theory yield a relatively tight distribution of scores.

how about the spitball idea, nobody is commenting on that.

Come on people, we need to figure this out now and get people to follow. We will be the class that changed the USMLEs forever.

I feel the power, it will be kind of like fight club, revolutionize the world, but in a nerdy way

We could figure out a way to pump marijuana smoke through the air vents during the test. (seems to work for you). 😀

Wow, nothing gets by you... 🙄

You need to find a new weed distributor.

your weed must be very low grade

I just came across this info. from one of our curriculum directors. The USMLE step I is scored not solely based on relative scores between the 16000 some test takers in a given year but the repertoire of questions from which they make an individual test have been scored on a relative score for many previous years. A lot of those questions are subsequently repeated but not necessarily on a given test day. Thus, if a lot of our test questions come from the database we would all be screwed even if we leave all the questions blank. It seems as though the NBME had thought about this possible trick before they devised their brilliant plan.

Damn them smart people who wrote this test.

How about Plan B, we kidnap the people who write this test, but instead of paying their ransom in money they pay it in USMLE questions. That way we get every question possible that they will test us on and we all ace the exam. Then we all do well and get the same grade.

Yup my mom should be proud, her kid is a current day einstein

I think studying is actually easier and a LOT less risky (compared to all the proposed alternative ideas above), so I'll have to stick with that.
