I am going to be a Yale Med first year and was wondering if bringing a car to New Haven is a good idea, and secondly what parking costs are? I will be living in Harkness.

hey--i don't think a car is really necessary here. everything is in walking distance including the train station which can take you to NY or Boston or wherever. Also, we have a bus system.....some people do keep cars, and there are garages with varying prices. there are usually student discounts and i think you can get parking in a garage for like $800-$1000 for the academic year. i'm not too sure (there's more info on the yale website), but i'd say a car is not necessary. Also, if u do bring it, def park in a garage cause it is new haven......

I too will be attending Yale in the fall and i have an additional "car" question. Though i will not be bringing up my car for my first year i fully intend on bringing one up for my second year and beyond which leads to my question of exactly how bad is the weather for driving. I currently have a very small sports car and was considering trading it in for a subaru WRX which has AWD but i was unsure if this was needed, so anyone with first hand experience i would greatly appreciate hearing your input. Thanks

get the wrx. AWD is tons of fun. good for going on a drive to take a study break

TAKE A CAR!!!!!!!

Yes, parking at Yale campus can be annoying; however, you'll want a car as it's really not a big city and you'll want to drive to the coast, walmart, movie theater etc. Trust me- after 4 years there I was near crazy without one- and i had the undergrad college system and a dorm. Luck!

Enjoy pepes, libby's and tre scalini =)

why does everyone worry about the weather when getting a car for the NE...do you plan on racing in the snow? You'll be fine in New Haven with any car...just make sure it is reliable to start in the cold. Note how every driver in the NE doesn't own a WRX as is recommended every time a 20 something year old says they want to live in the NE. I would also recommend a small car as other people don't care what you drive...and the garage once again recommended....and then again, i drive a boat and I don't mind (but I don't live there, just work)

Plenty of public transportation though, and lots of stuff within walking distance, but driving's not too bad in the city once you get used to it.

and i also recommend chicken parm at Almafi's, just remember that prices double for dinner!
