Hello everyone! I’m deciding between Brown and Maryland. Currently I live in the Philadelphia area so my first year at Maryland would be OOS and then hopefully I can transition to IS. Please let me know what you think about these schools, about things I may not have considered, and/or correct me if I’m wrong. Im open to any speciality but my possible interests are ENT, Anesthesiology. Thanks!
Brown
Pros
• P/F preclinical
• Need based scholarship of around $50,000 a year
• Providence is a nice small city and the Brown undergrad campus is beautiful
• Nice selection of programs which allow students to aid the community
• Decent research opportunities
• Slightly higher in residency director rankings
• Good match
Cons
• Slightly higher tuition: around $68,000 but offset by scholarship
• Upon first impression slightly unimpressed by med school facilities, compared to Maryland
• Further from home around 5 hr drive
Maryland
Pros
• After first year tuition is cheaper due to IS
• Merit based scholarship of $20,000 per year
• Slightly higher ranked
• Better facilities and health network?
• Slightly higher in USNWR rankings
• Closer to home around 2 hr drive
• More research opportunities due to funding
• Good match
Cons
• Tiered pass fail for courses other than foundations
• Community programs seem to be lacking
• Baltimore is ok
• If calculations are correct will be more expensive (~$60k) after 4 years than Brown
