I am a third year and will be taking ophtho elective in August besides the one in my home school. Two places I have been accepted for the elective are Brown and Tufts. I was wondring if anyone has any experience with phtho elecives at these two schools and what their thoughts are. The elective description at Brown states that students spend most of their time with a first year resident. The one at Tufts does not say anything about that but states that it it is designed for those interested in ophtho and students spend time in different subspecialties.Any opinions would be appreciated.

Also, I have three weeks off b/w now and the startof elective her at my school. Any suggestions about doing anything meaningful in ophtho during this time?
Thank you

Spending time with a first-year resident in August (one month of ophtho residency) may not be the best learning experience if you want guidance, attention, and formal teaching. I'm sure they'll be feeling pretty crazy. They may give you a lot of independence if you are comfortable with the basic exam, though.

On the other hand, by spending time in a lot of different clinics you may not end up getting to do much if it's this whole half-day of this, half-day of that stuff that never gives you enough time to really learn anything well.
