Hello, I know the question of whether to get a BS vs a BA has been covered ad naseum on these forums, however, I was wondering if I could get some opinions catered to my current situation.
I am currently pursuing a BS in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. I enjoy it very much. I am going to be completely honest though, I am scared as hell for our capstone labs (which are notorious GPA droppers). It is a very hard major (as I had been required to basically take the harder version of ALL classes except quantum dynamics). I came into college with many credits and had intended on graduating in 3 years, however I have changed my opinions to want to graduate in 3.5 and travel for the last half a year.
As of late, I have been heavily considering a BA in Chemistry. I have completely all the prereqs and it appears the only classes I MUST take now are electives (to which I would take Physio etc). This would make college a hell-of-a-lot easier and I would not longer have to bust my ass stressing about my performance on labs etc.
The question is, would any benefit I had from majoring in a B.S. be negated by switching to a B.A. or would medical schools still see that I had a VERY difficult course schedule.
All opinions are appreciated very much.
Thank you

Consider a Human Biology major, which is easier than all of the alternatives you mentioned.

(I'm BCH major.)

There's no difference between a BA and a BS. Are you kidding me?

If you have having as much difficulty completing the B.S. degree as you make it out to seem, then you should seriously question your decision to attend medical school. It shouldn't be that hard, man.

Just get the BA. If it comes up, just say that you wanted room to explore interests while you still could.

First of all it's very easy to get into the bandwagon of not taking the classes because someone... said they're difficult. Most of the time if you put enough effort you will do fine and since you are enjoying your biochem major, don't get discouraged by "hard." I have taken some GPA dropper classes and have gotten away with a good grade. Check your sources.
Regarding switching to BA, it shouldn't be a big of deal. It's the grades that matter and the fact that you like what you do in the long run.

Wow. Have you read the "you know your a gunner if..." thread? I believe one of the signs if you go on SDN to discourage people from going to med school.

There is absolutely no difference in a BA or BS, in fact bio degrees have the lowest acceptance stats of any major.

I have a BFA. 😳

BS vs. BA should make no difference. The general consensus around here seems to be to major in something you like that you'll get the highest GPA in.

That's because the majority of people that apply to med school are bio majors. That says nothing about the degree itself.

hey,
i was in the same spot that you were in, and asked the same question. lots of people replied from SDN. My friend, Jay who goes to johns hopkins school of medicine got a BA in anthropology in harvard. it really does not matter BA or BS, just do the easier path and enjoy the major so your GPA can flourish.
