I just had some questions about the APEX program at BU. It states that you can participate in practices around the country, but is every region covered? Or do they have a list of participating dentists and you have to choose? How does the assignment process work?

Also, BU states that you get paid for the internship. How much do students expect to earn during the APEX program?

Cheers!

From what some BU students told me when I was in dental school years ago was that they were being paid $6/hour. Some of them seem to be outraged because they were paying for the apex program(it's all part of the tuition). I was hoping that this was totally inaccurate?

I was told on my interview that you could do one of two things;

1) choose from existing APEX approved locations (all over country)

2) suggest an office where you would like to stay (also anywhere in country). The office must meet certain criteria
(i.e. OSHA regulations), and must be approved by the school.

You can work at any office so long as it is approved by the APEX office. At one time you could only get paid if you worked in Massachusetts and it would be up to the dentist to pay you if you were outside of Mass. Now students don't get paid for their APEX rotations because of the "economy" and some dentists were taking advantage of the students (taking out the garbage...).
