Hi, i'm wondering if there are people on here who know about any of the following three programs:

Boston University
Medical University of South Carolina
Northern Arizona University

I've gotten into the first 2, and am waiting to hear back from NAU. I'm pretty sure reputation-wise, BU is the best...however, I am not so sure I want to live in Boston.

I am mainly interested in MUSC because of their location, but am unsure if the benefits of their location is enough to outweight the costs of turning down an education from BU.

Any advice?

I went to BU. I came out strong, however, the key is being able to come out in the first place. I'd ask key questions to the schools: what is your attrition rate? what is the class tone/milieu (happy, anxious, etc.)? what are practicals like and what is the remediation process? BU's process was unfairly hard back when I was in school, but I'm not sure how it's changed, if at all.

Clinical experiences are superb, the quality of teaching is great in most but not all courses. Boston is freezing cold. Tuition is another factor... BU is very expensive and Boston is an expensive place to live. Make sure you combine all these factors and NOT just reputation. Great research at BU, too, if that's your thing.

thanks so much!

I'll ask those things...but what do you mean by "remediation process"? could you explain that please?

I'm betting that BU's reputation is not nearly worth the amount of debt you'll have to incur to attend the graduate school for three years.

I've known several MUSC grads and they seemed to be OK. And, should you wish to practice in S. Carolina after graduation, you won't have to relocate nad would have the added benefit of practicing in a state where POPTs are not legal (well, technically, it is not legal for a PT to work in a POPTs).

by remediation I mean if you fail a practical or don't maintain the required GPA (harder than it seems at BU) what is the process for making it up... if there is a process at all.

I agree with the debt comment above.

For the LOve of all things Holy, do NOT choose to go to MUSC. The physical therapy program is the absolute WORST in the country. Go to BU or anywhere else for that matter...but do NOT go to MUSC! I went to school there and the program is horrible....

Is there anybody else currently attending or who graduated from the pt program at BU? I get the impression that the retention rate may be a bit low, so I was curious to hear from those that might actually know. Is freddyDPT's assessment pretty accurate?

If I were you, I wouldn't be bashful and I'd call the program directly for the statistic. It's a big buck to spend so get the information from the horses mouth.

Good point, freddy. I guess that's the best way to get the actual number and go from there. Out of curiosity, did you feel as though those that didn't make it through the program weren't offered a fair shot at bringing up their grades, or was it that they changed their minds about wanting to be a pt, or a little of both?
