Does anybody here know why the average gpa and dat scores are lower for buffalo then stony brook--even though both are state (SUNY) schools.

Does this make stony brook students more sought after for residencies and specialities??

I also noticed the same trend and I assume that it's because of the class size. Stony Brook has a class size of 35 compared to the 85 of Buffalo, allowing Stony Brook to be more selective in whom it chooses. And with better selection, they're probably more likely to choose students with a higher undergrad GPA. As far as how this relates to specialties, I think that applications for those post-doc positions focus mainly on your performance in dental school itself and so I don't know if it would matter too much what your undergrad GPA was. Not completely sure on this, but that's what I've gathered from interviews. Anyone out there know for sure?

ws2004 i sent you a pm

Yep... WS2004 is exactly right. The only reason why Stony's acceptees have higher stats is because the school is small. Smaller number of seats means the school can be choosy.

Otherwise UB is pretty competitive-- There are plenty of people out there who are accepted to NYU or Columbia but rejected by UB (mostly out-of-staters).

HTH!

This statement just made me laugh. Why would a residency or specialty be looking at undergrad GPA & DAT scores in selecting its students? And even, hypothetically, if they did, the ones with the higher GPA/DATs at either school would be competitive. There are 4.0/high DATs enrolling at both schools; there are just less 3.0/lower DAT enrolling at Stonybrook, and UBTom explained why.

For the specialties and residencies that do look at rank & grades (from dental school, not from undergrad), it is all proportional. If there is a program that is only going to strictly look at the applicants in top 10% at any school, then they will look at (approximately) #1 - 5 at Stonybrook, and at #1 - 10 at Buffalo. Of course, if a school doesn't rank, then they have to look at all the applicants from that school. How else will they decide since they don't have the concrete number ot arbitrarily decide by? Although the no rank scenario doesn't apply to either SUNY school, our school ranks and I think SB does too.

Almost all the post-grad programs I applied to asked for my college transcript, but I don't know what they did with it b/c only one interview brought up anything about it. Only Harvard's post-grad application asked to fill in your DAT score. I don't know what they did with it there either - but I didn't have a DAT score so I left it blank (with a little note about why I don't have a score)...I also never heard from them for an interview. Oh well.
