Anyone else interviewing at Buffalo on 10/18? It's my first interview and I'm pretty excited/nervous.

Are any of you gonna be there? I'm getting in the day before, have no idea what to do... if you're interviewing too (or just around), wanna get dinner or something?

I'll be there, but I have plans already with friends. I'm sure I'mFillingFine (she's a dental student at Buffalo) can give you some cool ideas of what to do the day before, though. Can't wait to meet you and the applicants 🙂

Haha, okay Mr./Mrs. popular... I'll probably be wandering around campus, maybe we'll bump into each other? See you soon.

Close, but I arrive the night of the 18th. Interview's the 19th.

Haha, sorry. They're actually housing me and we need to catch up and stuff. I'm going to be on the upper campus (northern campus?) the night before. We'll def meet at the interview, though! And don't sweat it if it's your first one! I think the important thing with these interviews is to "know thyself" and you'll be fine 🙂

Hey you guys, i'll be at the interview on the 18th, too! where are you guys staying for the night before? I just booked the flight and the room. anyone knows how convenient/ reliable the taxi service in that area? see you guys soon! -christie

I'm going there on the 11th. My interview is on the 12th.

Hey folks, I was wondering how I should prepare for the buffalo interview. I will have mine on NOV 1st. Any suggestions?😳 Thanks.

Check the interview feedback. Look at your files from AADSAS and figure out potential questions from them. If you are really nervous get somebody to do a mock interview.

Good luck on your interview! As for good taxi services, I don't know their names but I do have the numbers of the ones I've used. I've had good luck with (716) 822-3030 and (716) 877-7111. You can also always look at Google maps or the yellow pages to find some near your hotel (put the numbers in your phone before you go so you have them handy).

Oh, and the whole day is super stressful. Interviewed by a board of 12 professors and the dean...no lunch served....every other applicant needs to write a 10-page essay.....and you have to ask the whole group if you can go to the bathroom. KIDDING KIDDING it's nothing at all. :meanie: And you get pizza and wings. And I might even be there. What more could you ask for?????

btw, if you send me $1000 and a puppy, I'll do the interview myself and recommend you highly to the adcom.

I was told if I have time to visit Anchor Bar. My friend swears by the wings and pizza. Anyone have any opinions or other cool places that are must see?

The pink "Visiting UB" sheet in the interview invitation packet lists some hotels that have a shuttle to campus. Check with your hotel, it seems like most have a shuttle to Buffalo.

Anchor Bar is fun; for those who don't know, it is the restaurant that invented the Buffalo wing back in the 60s (wings are only 40 years old and world famous!) It's actually a really cute place, and I have to say...the wings actually do rock!

For ideas on what to do, check out the event calendars at www.artvoice.com, http://www.gobuffaloniagara.com/, http://www.visitbuffaloniagara.com/events_0.html, and http://home.buffalo.com/

As for restaurants: there are SOOO many. Buffalo may not be the biggest or most aesthetic city, but it is known for having tons of amazing food. I'd recommend El Palenque, "O", Toro Tapas Bar, Empire Grill, Butterwood Dessert Restaurant or The Chocolate Bar (they ONLY serve desserts!), Tandoori's, and Tru Teas.

For things to do:

~Science Museum
~Art Museum (Albright-Knox Art Gallery. Friday nights the gallery is free from 5-10 and there are special events)
~Buffalo Zoo
~History Museum
~Buffalo Naval Park and lighthouse by the water in downtown
~Niagara Falls (der)
~Theatre District (Shea's is the big theatre and there are several others)
~Bills football
~Chippewa street downtown (for clubs and bars)
~the Elmwood strip (trendy, upscale coffee shop sort of place with art galleries and more bars)
~Walden Galleria or Boulevard malls
~Buying me dinner in exchange for my sage advise <--highly recommend by all local tourism agencies

Good information but unfortunately I will be leaving as soon as I am done with the interview.

haha i'mfillingfine, you almost freaked me out for a second when you mentioned the 10-page essay... :meanie: thanks so much for the advise on all the helpful things! Definitely gonna try the original buffalo wings! Actually I was wondering how safe it is around the campus/ airport area at night? Thanks again! 🙂

The south campus isn't the safest place to be alone at night, especially on the weekends. And I imagine the airport is ok inside the terminal (there's not much around the terminal.) Just so you know, they are around a 15 minute drive apart from each other; not in the same area.

Many parts of Buffalo are super safe and the suberbs are very upscale and residential, but within the city the good parts are mixed right in with the more rundown ones, so there's a huge mix. You shouldn't have any commitments on campus (either for your interviews or during school) past dark, and if you're there late working on labwork you'd drive right to the door of the lab anyway. No one's ever had a problem. Good luck!! :luck:

Yeah, I heard it is located on the border between the ghetto and the more affluent neighborhood. How is traffic around campus? How do you get from the airport to the south campus by bus?

http://www.nfta.com/

I am looking for route information through the above website. They don't have any subways running from airport to the south campus.👎

Do you need to get right to campus or to a hotel? If it's to campus, definitely check the NFTA web site for a bus. (There isn't a subway in Buffalo. Well, there is, but it just goes down main street and is 10 stops...just pretend there isn't one 😉) Or a taxi (I listed some numbers earlier.) It's around 10-15 minutes so it shouldn't be too expensive. Just make sure they bring you to the correct campus! (the airport is equidistant from both, but you go separate ways)

If it's to the hotel, there is probably a shuttle.

Or I'll do it for a mere $75.

The hotel is right around where the campus is located. It sucks that Buffalo doesn't have much of a subway. What are the rates for renting cars at the airport?

You would have to research various car rental places to get estimates on that; I'm sure you can find it out online.

How far is eggert and main st. intersection from the south campus?

I heard that there is an applicants' status check page at the Buffalo website. Can someone please provide the link to that page?

Just about a mile.

Google maps is your friend! 🙂 http://maps.google.com/

I'm more than happy to answer any questions, but I would like to send out a general word that many of all your peoples' trip-planning inquiries (stuff about directions, prices and numbers for taxis, where everything is, distances) can be easily found online and is good practice for planning all your interviews anyway since you'll have to coordinate all this stuff for each city. I'm more than happy to answer questions about UB itself or fun things to do in Buffalo!

Which I did and even measured the distance with a ruler. But some of the online maps do have disclaimers that they may not be a perfect representation of the location. I don't want to go there and be totally ambushed if it turns out to be slightly different.

Thanks for the info.

I found the interview nerve wracking. It felt like to professors jumping on me on whatever I said. Hopefully they will think nothing of my slip ups.:scared:

I just had my interview today and thought it went awesome! The students and staff were great and very laid back. Definitely my kind of school 🙂

might have seen you guys at the library...what was up w/ all those dudes?

We got sandwiches.. what a jip!

Dude....those weren't sandwiches...they managed to get Anderson's to cater! That was "beef on weck", a Buffalo specialty! The kimmelweck roll is only served in Buffalo and that is the restaurant that makes the best ones in the city.

They actually did have to pull a lot of strings for that, but I guess the word didn't get around about the weck 😉 Haha, sorry you missed out on pizza and wings. You TOTALLY won't have EITHER of those the whole 4 years you'll live in Buffalo....🙄
