I'm so bummed out. After weeks of studying I did miserable on the oat.

QR: 290
RC: 350
BIO: 370
GChem: 280
OChem: 330
PHY: 300
Total science- 320
Academic average- 320

I've got about 100 hours of shadowing experience and a 3.912 GPA. I'm planning on applying for the entering class of 2011 so when June 15 hits I'm going to be on top of things. I'm applying to Nova Houston Missouri and Tennessee. Does anybody know if I have a shot with what I've got?

To be honest, I think you should rewrite the exam. You have lots of time to do that.

It seems to me from your scores that you put almost all of your time into biology and neglected other areas. For example, I think General Chemistry is probably the easiest section on the OAT and yet you scored a 280 on it.

I think you've got a really good shot of getting in. You are applying early which is huge, you have a great GPA, and an average OAT score. Remember that the OAT averages have been dropped so your score isn't bad. You can always retake it if you think you will score higher, but you don't necessarily need to.

I agree with optohopeful in that you should definitely try taking it again. Also, optohopeful is right in that your Gen Chem score can definitely get a boost if you put some more effort in it. I also think that you can focus a bit more on the Physics and improve on that -- alot of the OAT Physics is fundamentals.

You have plenty of time between now and when applications open. Take your time to prepare yourself. Good Luck!

look at the school websites and see what the lowest OAT score they accepted was. I know for Berkeley its usually a 300 so you're good to go! you have a great gpa and experience which is important. you have to think of yourself as a whole package and not just worry about the OAT. If you want to retake it you can. i recommend taking a practice test at a kaplan center. it shows you exactly what subjects you need to improve on so you can be more prepared the next time. if you don't want to take it again, just bump up other things like volunteering or leadership or write a kick ass essay because those things go into your application as well.

you are more than a test score so don't forget it! 🙂

With that GPA and 320 OAT, I think you can get into almost any schools if the interview went well and you show passionate toward this profession.
I don't think you should waste money taking the Kaplan class or retaking it. Apply real early and see what's going on. If by Oct or Nov and you don't hear from them then you can retake the OAT again.

Good luck and good job.

I'm almost positive with your high GPA, getting in with that score shouldn't be a problem at all. The only school I am unfamiliar with is SCO but again with your background I would say your score is fine if you are aiming for Nova, Houston, and a few other schools.

If I am correct with the new OAT scale, your 320 would be comparable to a much higher score??
Funny story is I got a 330 first time taking it and was freaking out whether or not to retake the exam (got a 300 on math). So I spent the whole summer restudying but at the end decided to not retake it since I did not want to go through the 6 hours of stress again and maybe do worse. I decided to apply early and see what happened while still being paranoid of whether or not I should retake the OAT since I restudied so hard... Moral of the story is I got into all the schools I wanted to with no problem and spent my whole summer restudying for the test for nothing!
