Looking for the truth...

Calculus is not going very well at all. Those damned functions and graph thingies!!!!!! Being a non-trad who had algebra eons ago, I can't remember them as well as I should and it's screwing me up royally! I'm catching on to limits, continuity, derivatives, but she keeps bringing in those damned functions and graphs- it's killing me!!!! If, and I stress IF I can somehow, anyhow, possibly snag a "C" in this class, will it hurt me in the future? Being an optometrist may now never happen..... whoa is me......🙁 🙁 🙁 🙁 🙁 !!!!!!!!

One C will not kill all your chances of getting into OD school. I got C's in organic and I'm still here. So, cheer up... schools know it's harder to go back when your a non-trad.. but you're usually (and I'm generalizing here) more determined students. Good luck with calculus... do as many problems as you can and do your best. If you get a C it won't be the end of the world. 😀

The opt. schools that require calculus only require one course, however, professors try to get you into taking two of them. Do many people take both classes, or would taking the second class be a waste of time?

Tyra -- you probably know I'm a non-trad, too -- though I took calc I and II as an undergrad years ago. I did suck wind in my o-chem classes as a returning student (got a "C" for the 2nd semester lecture/lab), and though I was asked about it during interviews, I just explained that it was a tough subject and one I found difficult to wrap my mind around. I guess it worked, because I got accepted. 🙂 Just be sure to point out the great grades in your other courses!

J.opt -- personally, I wouldn't take the 2nd semester of calculus unless it's required for your major -- that's the only reason I did. It wouldn't be a waste of time, just *torture*! 🙂 If you enjoy it (and think you'll get a good grade), go for it. I think the schools would be just as happy if you took another class in its place to stretch your mind (philosophy, business, writing, etc.).

Yes...unfortunately I am one of the mindless do-dos who chose biochemistry as a major "because I like chemistry so much". So according to my Chem professor, I will use Calc in subsequent chem courses for the next 2 years.... and, yes, I will need to take Calc 2...🙁

Calculus can **** me.
