Buprenorphine and Suicide Prevention

Amazing what scientists will come up with- suggesting placing 9 million people in America on narcotics to slightly reduce thoughts of suicide......

I guess if you're depressed because your doctor threatened to discontinue your opioids then this should do it. The cops in my area say that suboxone is the weekend drug of choice because of the low hangover effect. They say that the drug culture does not carry much cash but primarily casino chips and suboxone tabs which are considered = $20. Google suboxone and read the druggie forums and they say that suboxone is the best high. The goal used to be to get the court to declare you disabled. Now you also need a diagnosis of opioid addiction so that you can get your suboxone.

Agree that bup is sometimes abused, but have two questions

When these cops speak of the weekend drug of choice do they mean suboxone or straight bup? The later seems more likely and cops get them confused.

I also wonder about your statement of "best high". I'm sure there are some junkies who do get high with bup, but I highly doubt the majority of opioid abusers would preferentially choose suboxone if they simultaneously had the option of the instant rush of injecting heroin, fentanyl, crushed oxy, etc.

I agree that the cops may get confused, but suboxone does seem to be plentiful on the street. The physician's office next to me has an MA whose husband is a cop. Last week she showed me a picture of what they got in a bust and it was boxes and boxes of suboxone tabs. It looked like what you might expect it you could go to Costco and buy it by the case. The "best high" statement is not so much mine as what they are saying about it. Look it up. Whenever a drug rep comes by with something new I google it to see just how abuse deterrent it is or how unappealing it is for recreational use.

Agreed. It's the patient and not the medication. Some patients will eat dog **** if it gives them a high.

They think that the person who was busted with these is someone who buys the meds from the person for whom they were prescribed, as opposed to someone who has the key to the pharmacy. Purely for pleasure. Another recent bust was a guy with pancreatic cancer who was selling and sending his Opana to someone in Indiana. When the prescriber was confronted he said "the guy's got cancer, and he only got caught doing this once".

If you are tempted to believe anything that the drug companies say then read the book "Dreamland". Free food will never taste the same. That book also has a description of the new business model for heroin. It sounds like a heroin dealer went to an Amway meeting and had a revelation. You can have a respectable habit on $20/day. They deliver. They don't like big cities because of the gangs. They practice racial profiling because they don't carry guns and they want to avoid people with guns. You get free samples if you bring them a new customer.

The rep who was selling a new abuse deterrent oxycontin bought lunch and brought down a noted pain doc from Portland to speak to us. The pain doc was a heck of nice guy, but was telling a local mid-level that her patient on 60 mg bid was not being treated with excessive amounts. I didn't mention that the patient is being treated for fibro. After lunch I googled the product and started reading in the pusher-user network forum about how they are coming up with ways to extract the naloxone from the oxycodone. The general consensus was just chew it and wash it down with beer and wait 30 minutes for the naloxone to wear off.

The rep who bought us lunch stopped by and I told him why I didn't like the talk that we had with lunch. I told him about the book. He bought it and said that someone at work saw him with it and mentioned it. He lost the oxy account and now pushes Flector patches.
