hello all,
quick question: i have space to fit in one more bio class before graduation, but which do i choose?
options:
molecular genetics
cell bio
developmental bio
histology
immunology

thanx,
-YML

they make a cream for that you know?

I gotta believe you've had some cell bio in one form or another...histo's not worth it...

I'd say either development or immuno. Immuno's useful, and ebryology sucks but you need it for the boards...might as well take it as a slower paced ugrad class...here it doesn't even get its own class, its just lumped in with anatomy.

ive had some exposure through intro bio, but thats about it.
thanx for the input.

That's really tough because you are going to do all of those again your first year of med school. I would suggest taking the one that is most foreign to you. Take the pain in undergrad while you can because it'll be 1000x faster in medical school. If I had it to do all over again I would have taken Immuno in undergrad, I really had no clue that it was THAT HARD.

for me, I would do either a jmore advanced cell bio course so you have some idea of cellular signaling.

or immuno or embryo

immuno = useful med school class and an exploding field (according to my class, in 1 month learning immunology, I learned more than the entire world knew of it 20 years ago)

embryo = med school class you leave for the last minute and don't want to learn, but need to for the boards and tests.

I had a great time in immunology without too much trouble learning it. Perhaps it's because we had a really good course and a teacher who took the time to really get into the clinical aspects of it?

Immunology...you'll thank yourself later

i'd have to agree w/ everyone else.......immuno or embryo :horns:

I'd take immuno. Embryo may be a bit tougher in some ways, but knowing immuno well will be more of an advantage in the long run. There's precious little embryo/anatomy on the boards. Good luck. 🙂

If I could do it all over again I'd take Immunology. It's an insane pace in med school (It was something like 3 weeks). Even though the course coordinator told us that historically people who take micro/immuno in undergraduate do about the same as those who didn't take it, the peace of mind alone would have made it worthwhile to take the class in a semester rather than 3 weeks.

I would say a good cell bio class will teach you principles you will use throughout medical school. Undergrad histology or embryology probably will not cover enough material to be meaningfully helpful once you reach medical school. As an undergrad, you should probably focus on learning scientific principles that will stick with you and don't bother with memorizing facts that you will forget and have to re-learn all over once you hit med school.

I took both Embryology and Immunology in undergrad and boy am I glad I did. Either one of them is extremely beneficial.

immuno or histo...the learning curve is steep and the language is foreign (for immunology at least), I wish I'd been more comfortable differentiating one squiggly pink tissue from another. I'm paying for it now with the path histology.

I suggest taking Golf. You will benefit greatly from it.
