I posted this in the Dental Forum but didn't get any respones. I was wondering if anyone had any opinions on BU's APEX program as I am seriously considering attending there.

Don't know about the program specifically there, but BU came developed this program from UMDNJ's Gateway program. Very similar. College kids accepted into the program stay at the school for 2 weeks during the summer and get to see and have hands on experience in doing procedures (not on real people of-course). Chances are 99% that if you made it into that program, then you're garranteed admission into the actual school when you apply there (assuming that your grades don't take a flaming turn for the worse). During my interview at UMDNJ, there was someone there who had already been in the Gateway program, and the adcoms told us that they only had 5 more seats available. We all looked at each-other and knew that the Gateway dude already took 1 of the 5.

Hope this helps.

From speaking with students that I've met casually from BU, they've told me they think the APEX program is just "a way to get the normal stream dental students out the BU facilities, so that they can get in their international students." They said it was a way for BU to make more money.

It was sorta my feeling that the APEX program was something I could've done before dental school, on my own. It sounded pretty much like shadowing. I personally wouldn't want to spend time doing that - but it may be beneficial for some people.

But these are my personal experiences and what I've heard. I don't go to BU, so take what I say with a grain of salt. In general, I think BU is an awesome school, and I'm sad that it gets put down so much on SDN.
