From what I heard at my interview, it is pretty worthwile. It gives you an advantage in that you learn about all the instruments and materials used, and the basics about procedures. Some students get paid, but usually not much.

What sucks though, is that you do it for a big chunk of the semester and you still are paying tuition.
 
A BU dental school student told me that in the first two years, you just help to settle down the patients, deliver the materials, and perform the sucktion. He said no dentist would let you practice on "their own patients". I doublt about the ad.
