I am currently a 3rd year DO student. I keep contemplating whether or not to order business cards but don't want to buy them if I will never need to hand them out. Has anyone found that they needed business cards while on away rotations or during residency interviews?

Thanks! 🙂

Business cards saying "medical student?" Not only unnecessary, but kinda geeky. 😉

Don't do it. There's no reason to have one as an MS3. Most of the time, I hoped people forgot who I was after I left.

Aside: Several years ago, a friend and I were out drinking, and he approaches a girl. Gets her number, which is provided by way of a business card. Funny thing, she's an elementary school teacher. Does she hand them out to her students?

Also, the other med students on the team will probably have a good laugh at your expense for handing out business cards...there is a 3rd year from a different school at the hospital I'm at who hands out business cards. I wonder if she would do it knowing all the snickers she gets from other students and even residents.

What would you even put on it "Foley Cath Specialist"....

Ok... well I think it's settled then... Thanks for preventing me from being laughed at! 😉

I know a guy from college who is not in school, doesn't have a job, but still has business cards. Under his name, the card just says "Spiritual Advisor". Seems to get him a lot of phone numbers in bars. Which, until you are employed is the only real point of having a business card. It's only geeky if it's not part of your rap.

ok, but what about residency fairs and lunches with program directors?

Your bus. card probably won't get you preferantial treatment when they receive several hundred apps.

Heck, your card probably won't even make it to their office. For every sincere student, there are 10 that show up for the free lunch. They don't know which is you.
