Did you guys buy new ones for residency? I am fairly happy with my steth that I used for the past 4 years but I don't know if I should be upgrading the thing for the start of residency. I have a very basic Prestige that was about $120 back then. It has done the job well through med school. I honestly don't know that it will make any difference to my medical training but I figured I would ask.

To buy or not to buy?

There are only 2 3 reasons to buy a new stethoscope: loss, theft, destruction. Otherwise just go with what you have until it is lost, stolen or destroyed. It's only a matter of time.

I bought a new one, but only because I'd had the one I used for medical school for about 8 or 9 years and the tubing was hard and starting to crack - so I guess it goes along with docB's rules - "almost" destroyed...

I've also had to replace them because I loaned one to a doc I worked with and it walked away - permanently borrowed and probably subsequently lost. This doc was a bit of an airhead. Probably still is, in fact 🙂

In defense of all air heads (of which I am), the air is more polluted than in years past, so give us a break. We're doing the best we can with what we have.
