I accidentally bought an instructors guide of the textbook of a class I'm going to take next semester. One of the boxes I accidentally checked was "I certify that I am an instructor and will not distribute to students" (honestly I didn't read this the first time; I just checked it off thinking it was some random send me offers/deals thing". Do you think I will get in trouble with the publishing company for this? This was an online version of the book and the site didn't ask for any identifying info that would distinguish me as a professor/teacher (didn't ask for institution, class name/title, or department etc). It only asked me why I'm buying it and I answered that I'm a student who would like to do the problems and also get the answers so I can see if I did them right. Could I get in trouble for this because I said I was a student but I checked off the box saying I'm an instructor? Help please I'm very worried or am I just being really paranoid?

You are likely now on the NSA watch list.
The only reason to worry would be if the instructor explicitly said that using this instructor text is not allowed. Than it would be cheating.
You are joking about the NSA watch list right?

The instructor never said anything against using the text bc we haven't had class yet (this is for next semester). I'm worried that the publishing company online where I bought it from would notice that I mentioned I'm a student but checked off the box that said i certify that I'm an instructor. Will they look further into this and potentially notify my school? I'm very worried

Fix your sarcasm meter and no they dont give a crap about you.

lol OP.... you're either trolling or just simply an unintelligent person asking such a question. (serious)

The publisher could not care less, all they want is the money. The checkbox is most likely there so that they can wash their hands of any responsibility about distributing the book to students - it allows them to say "See, he told us he was an instructor?"

I swear I'm not trolling. I'm being very serious because the publishing company online might think I lied to think. I honestly hope the guy above you is right and that they will not give a **** about me

lol and how would your school or the company know who you are? people buy and use test banks and such regularly, along with past midterms/exams/lab reports... People torrent textbooks.. MCAT material.. etc Is anyone actually naive to think such things are uncommon?

see what I meant by unintelligent 😉

But the thing is I had to provide them with my credit card info and billing address and name

Meh... even in theory, you're not the only school that uses this textbook.

He's joking about the NSA watch list, but that isn't even your biggest problem. You need to be concerned about the hit squad that the publishing company will be sending after you.:ninja::ninja::ninja:

I ordered my statistics book off eBay (and it was an instructors edition)
I have never done so well in a math course, because I knew I could do both odd and even problems and have the answers. I wish I could get more text books that way!

But you didn't have to check off a box that said "I certify that I'm an instructor" like I accidentally did. I'm mainly worried about this

Just make sure you come clean on your med school application in the "anything else we need to know" essay and you'll be fine.
I wouldn't give you a fellowship spot, but there are plenty of other programs out there.
