hi all,i am an IMG ,with dreams of doing psychiatry in a good university program..can some experienced soul tell me by what time should i be ready with my scores ?....it is a very tight position for me,with only 5 months left for applications to start(sept 1st).Can I apply by sep end and still be called for interviews???plzzz help me with some inputs.
i got an oppurtunity to do observership for may.i ll finish off my step 1 in april....so that leaves me with only 3 months for step 2 .(if i MUST apply in sept 1st week to be considered by some good programs)any help highly appreciated.

i took my step 2 late and thus didnt match. the most important thing is if you are a US grad or IMG. if you are a us grad then i think you can match with late scores. i am an IMG and i took step 2 Jan 17. I got 5 interviews based on one score but my score i feel came out too late. it came out 1 week before the ROL deadline and i feel most programs already ranked everyone. i know for sure it was too late for a prematch. i even had an interview at harvard south shore. my scores were 85/78. a friend of mine who went for IM got 10 interviews with one score. she had a 97. anyways i would say there are 2 relative "deadlines." one around october or november (depends on program. a lot of programs in the NY area end their last interview dec 30 so it may be ealier) where you 2nd score will get u interview invites. the 2nd realistically speakin is dec 30th in order to get ranked. remember the usmle takes a 2 week holiday the first 2 weeks of jan. also bear in mind that this year the last day u should take step 2 cs is mid november (check the ecfmg or other site.)

my advice is take the nbme. if it is november and you are scoring 80 then take it. it is better to sometimes have an earlier score that is low rather than a late higher score. my next advice is apply on time. u are allowed to apply without anything. i think u can even apply without your step 1 score even. i applied 10 days after they started since my PS was not ready. i didnt know u could send ur application without a PS. make sure u apply on day 1.

i have seen others who took their exam in november and they thought they missed the match or they applied late. they could have matched. i took mine in jan 17 and was still in the match.

also doing step 2 in 3 months seems tough. it is great you are doing a observership but i would finish step 2 first as that is more important to get interviews. if u still wanna do an observership first just do a month now. u could do more later. u could turn in your LOR from the observership later on. also take ur cs on time as well. unless u are a 100% sure u will be takin step 2 by october take your cs first. i had to stop my step 2 prep in the middle to take the CS since i was gonna take a course. i feel a CS course may save u time. that is why i did it.

feel free to pm me. hope this helps and good luck.
