Hey guys I have a very particular question and wanted some advice.
I will be applying this year and was wondering what I should do (if anything) about a C- I got during second quarter O.Chem. Now I've already graduated this past December from The University of Chicago (so I can't exactly retake the course there) plus a C- is considered to be passing by the school.
I realize I should probably retake but I'm confused because
a) My school ran on the quarter system and I got the C- during the 2nd out of 3 quarters so even if I were to retake how do I do so now that I'm back home (Texas) where all schools run on the semester system
b) I intend on submitting my application early and with O.Chem being the only class in which I received a "poor" grade should I just state on my application that I intend on retaking sometime before matriculation
(BTW last quarter I took Biochem and received an A-, I'm not sure if that helps the situation any)
c) Texas medical schools REQUIRE a grade of C or better on all prereq's so....

I would really appreciate a response because although I realize this may sound like a stupid problem it could potentially cost me come application time.

If you're applying to Texas schools and if they do in fact require a C then I think you have your answer.

Stating that you will be retaking a class wouldn't carry much weight I wouldn't think. Promising to do better doesn't mean much =].

I don't think a single poor grade will kill your chances. I had 2 C's and a C+ on my transcript, two of which I retook, one I did not. I had good explanations for them (freshman year, one in a major I since abandoned, etc.) and my academic performance and MCAT were otherwise acceptable.

I appreciate the response but if I retake should it be a 2nd semester OChem (which I suppose is the equivalent to 2nd quarter) AND more importantly can I go ahead and submit my application early as planned, retake over the summer and update individual schools when I get the grade

Sorry I don't think I can be of any more help!

Repeats are generally flagged on your transcript by your school with a RPT after them. I don't know how that would get transferred over by taking a different course at a different school with a different number of credit hours.

I think sending an email or two to the admissions offices of some schools you're considering might be helpful.

I guess if youre applying to Teaxas schools then you would have to retake it.. but i personally had a lot of trouble my first year in college. I started with a 2.5 gpa, and i got a C in each of my first two quarters. But with that said i still got into medical school because the rest of my grades were pretty good (mostly A's a few A-'s and a couple B's).. I don't think it will hurt you that much, but it may be good to explain it a little in your PS... hope that helps!
