I know that a "C" is needed in all of the classes that are pre-reqs for medical school. I only have one grade in the C range on my transcript, and it was in o chem I. I'm pulling an A in O Chem II, so I want to know if I absolutely have to retake O Chem I because I got a C- (I had an A+ in O Chem lab, go figure). I understand it would probably be a good thing to retake it, but where it's my only C and I clearly have since mastered the material (not to mention that I'm graduating next year), I would like to know if it's absolutely imperative that I make time for it.

Thanks >.>

in my school you would be required to retake o-chem 1 or your o-chem 2 grade wont count. You have to have at least a '2.0' for pre-req classes to continue on to the next level. A C- is not a 2.0...its like a 1.8 or something like that

maybe your school is different then mine?

I believe you would have to retake with a C-.

No, it doesn't. You will either have to retake or apply only to schools that require "C-" minimum, which would limit you significantly.

I had a C- in my second quarter of physics, which didn't seem to affect anything. However, I only applied to six schools... I also then finished the physics sequence in a post-bac program on the semester system, so I partially repeated the second quarter material. I got an A and did well on PS on the MCAT, and then TA'd the course so that might have been why my C- didn't matter...

I was actually told not to re-take (by my program), and that my C- was fine (except for it hurting my GPA...). But if I were in your shoes I would contact schools you plan to apply to and ask what they recommend--if they recommend re-taking and you have another year before you graduate, then why not solve what could potentially be a problem?

I got a C- in a required lab class and got a few interviews and an acceptance. I asked my pre-med advisor about this and they said it would not be something that would specifically hold me back. I also figured that if it was unacceptable, don't you still have time to retake it the summer before if its absolutely necessary?

Wow I'm in the EXACT same situation. I was intending to retake it this summer even though I'm doing well in Orgo II just to boost my GPA/not limit where I can apply. But due to financial reasons that's a no go. I don't have room either fall semester (I'm a sophomore) and next summer I have a decent chance at a research program at my school. Does that mean I have to take a gap year to take Orgo I again after I graduate? Should I try to take it at a different i.e. cheaper school? Or just write it off? I'm really upset that this one class is rearranging my whole undergrad plan....

So I asked a very similar question a couple of months ago then decided to call-up a few schools and here's the answer I got: Having spoken with the Admissions office at UTSouthwestern, UTSA, and Texas Tech they ALL told me that a C- is still considered passing though of course it wouldn't hurt to retake. So don't freak out since one C- won't eliminate you from contention
