I'm not that good with dissections. For PM&R do you do group dissections per cadaver or does every resident get their own cadaver to dissect?

I'm asking because I hated dissecting and was never good at it in Anatomy class. How will this affect me during residency??? Are there any other options besides dissecting? Can we observe?

Thanks!

Many programs have cadaver lab anatomy courses but most (from what I can tell) do not do actual dissecting. There isn't time for that in residency so they get already dissected bodies. I ave heard about residents getting paid extra for dissecting before the course but you shouldn't worry about it.

That said, PM&R is very anatomy heavy so if you hated anatomy you might think twice about if PM&R is a good fit for you.

Dont get me wrong, I loved anatomy but I was never good at dissecting so thats why I dont want to do surgery. But I liked studying for it, its just memorization and we have to be good at it in order to do OMM in DO school.

So when I searched Temple University PM&R curriculum page, this is what I found that made me believe that we have to do dissections:

" Under the supervision of the Department of Anatomy, Temple University Health Sciences Center, dissection of the back and the limbs is performed, with special emphasis on those aspects pertinent to Rehabilitation Medicine and Orthopedic residents. Cadaveric dissection is required for PGY2 and PGY3 residents. "

I have interviewed at programs this year that do it both ways. Some with already dissected bodies and some in which the residents do the dissecting.

Do you know which programs you have to dissect and which ones have the cadavers are dissected?

I really would not let this factor into your ranking decisions..... just be happy that a program has any involvement with cadaveric anatomy.... not all do. Also, we're not surgeons... I don't think anyone will really care about your dissection ability.
