What do you think(for undergrad)? Current and former students opinions especially.

Pomona 😀
SLO 👎

For the same reasons as Chris...we're both alumni of Pomona 🙂 Seriously though, they're probably both great schools. I had a classmate in vet school from SLO.

Is there any part of the Pomona campus not on the tour that I should try to check out?

They probably won't let you up into the reptile room that they keep lizards, turtles and venomous snakes in... but if you ever take herpetology at Cal Poly Pomona... you will see them. 🙂

I'm also a Cal Poly Pomona grad and loved it. I had some awesome teachers and a great time getting a Zoology degree. That's one thing that Cal Poly Pomona offers over Cal Poly SLO... a Zoology degree! If you're interested in that kind of thing that is. 🙂

Either way I'm sure both schools are awesome!!

Mmm sort of a hijack but which would be better for undergrad?

Davis or
Pomona?

I got into both but am leaning towards Davis atm.

I'm leaning towards not going to Davis mostly because I want to experience others schools and environments. Going to the same school for sooo long is kind of daunting. (In case its not obvious yet Davis is my #1 pick for vet school😀)

Not to be a negative-nancy, but the area around Pomona isn't exactly the best (I live near there) environment for a school :S But if your not from around SoCal, then I guess the change in area could be a good new experience. My argument for Davis is basically the same as yours 😛

btw, love your avatar 😀 So cute~

Why? I'm visiting both this week. What should I make sure to see at Pomona?

'cause...😀

No really, I am an alumnus and I absolutely LOVED my time there. I was brought up extremely urban, so undertaking an animal science degree, in a school which is based on "hands on learning" was an awesome experience. The faculty were the most supportive people I had ever encountered in academia (the animal science faculty that is). I just love that place (maybe I can make a commercial😳 )

Oh and I have to add that the "Pomona" that CPP is in is NOT down town. It is actually a very beautiful campus, should be considered Diamond Bar and not Pomona. (Note I am also a Western Alumnus, which is in down town so I know the difference well.)

I don't know what the tour of Cal Poly Pomona covers - I took a tour SO long ago that it's probably different now (with different buildings etc.).

Davis vs. Cal Poly - depends on the major/degree. I majored in animal science/pre-vet option at Cal Poly. A friend from high school went to Davis with a similar interest/major and dropped out (went to a different major for a totally different career)...said the classes were huge and ultra-competetive. Not quite the same as Cal Poly - we had smaller classes and a more "intimate" experience. Even the GE classes weren't *that* huge. I can only remember 1 or 2 that were in actual "theatres" as opposed to classrooms (with desks kinda like in high school).

I look back to undergrad with fond memories. Even the crazy GE classes that were difficult are kind of funny now...

You should watch "Gattaca" (movie). Cal Poly Pomona's main admin. building is used as a sci-fi apartment building. Pretty cool 🙂

Thanks for everyones advice. Wish me luck on my 5 hours drive tomorrow!

Hmm that's interesting... could anyone give a comparison on the side of Davis?

Well I'm back alive. But barely. Driving in LA is 😡. I liked the school, nice atmosphere, pretty campus, nice people, good academics, lots of opportunities. The only things I didn't like were the area and the driving. My lungs hurt just looking at the sky. I think if I did go I would most definitely have to live on campus. Unfortunately they did not give a tour of the AG department which I have heard is really nice. So it looks like I might have to make the drive again some time soon. Hopefully I'll have some company next time😕. BTW has anyone lived and worked on the farms? If you have could you please tell me a little about it? And again thanks for everyones comments before I went.

What did you think about SLO? I didn't go to school there, but I lived in the area for a while. SLO definitely has the small town, college environment feeling, and is a fun and beautiful place to live (right next to the beach) 😀.

I loved SLO!!! Everything was great. Both schools have a nice campus and strong AG programs. They also have friendly faculty and students(definitely not like Berkley). They also both focus on hands on learning which is VERY important. As far as the town, area, weather and driving are concerned SLO has Pomona completely beat.
But I think there might be more opportunities to work and make connections in the horse industry studying at Pomona though.

While some classes at Davis are big (the science pre-reqs that everyone has to take...bio, physics, chem, biochem, genetics, physiology, etc.) I didn't feel that it was competitive. The nice thing about big classes: printed notes are available (although I never used them), lectures were usually podcast, and the curve was generous (sometimes too generous, IMO). I never had problems meeting with faculty in office hours, though, or getting letters of rec.

Thanks mtrl1! It's a relief to hear that since today I filed for the SIR so I will definitely be attending in the fall 🙂 Btw, have you heard anything good about Russian at Davis?

I'm not Russian, but I have a lot of Russian friends....there used to be a Russian club, but I think it became more of a drinking club, if it still even exists. But yes, there are lots of Russian students at Davis, and they do teach language classes.
