Hi everyone! A good friend of mine has a Cocker Spaniel, Patton, who has had chronic ear infections. At the last vet visit, the veterinarian said that Patton's ear had calcified and would need surgery by a specialist. My friend contacted a lady who does Cocker rescues and she mentioned BLUE POWER, a homeopathic treatment. The lady said she and others have had great results from using it. It consits of Isopropyl alcohol, Boric acid, and genetian violet solution(1%). All these things are available at your local pharmacy. I was just wondering if any of you had every heard of BLUE POWER. My friend has started using it to see if it helps poor Patton but she is still going to bring him to the specialist to see what he has to say. Thanks for any feedback on calcification of the ear and BLUE POWER.

Hmm, roach killer and rubbing alcohol...

Gentian violet is a commonly used anti-fungal, so I can see where that might help with some types of ear infections. The alcohol might help dry the ear and make it less hospitable to yeast, which like warm, moist places. I'm guessing the boric acid must have some antiseptic or drying properties I don't know about (I've only used it to kill roaches).

If the dog has been treated with standard therapies already and the infections keep coming back, it's likely there is some underlying cause and Blue Power isn't going to help. And it certainly isn't going to help calcification, though if it ends up irritating the ears further it could make it worse.

Why doesn't your friend just stick to her vet's advice and not use any additional medications? I know it might seem like anything is worth a try before resorting to surgery, but if one vet has already said it will be necessary... It really sounds like it should be the advice of the vet that your friend should be taking - not that of a rescue organization (or online forum, for that matter).
