I'm currently completing my masters thesis study and just sent of my apps to vet schools. So I figured I would throw our a scenario that I'm currently dealing with involving one of my calves to see what everyone else thought and get opinions on what to do:

Breed: Jersey
DOB: 8/29/10
Weight: 80lbs

The calf has been sick for going on 2 weeks: I started out using Nuflor, then after no turn around hit him with Excede, no response, hit him with Micotil and finally he got his first dose of Draxxin yesterday.

The primary symptom is high temperature, which has been ranging from 104 to 107.7, going up and down over the days but never much below the 104, I think one day he was down to 103.6. For the temperature I have been giving him banamine either IV and/or IM, depending on how fast I need to bring the temp down, but I have never gone over 1cc a day. I've been backing off on the banamine because of the possibility for calves to develop stomach ulcers from prolonged use of banamine. I've also been dousing in water and positioning a fan over him to try and bring down the temp.

I forgot to mention, this study is taking place in AZ, and the temperature has been ridiculously high, we were still in the 100s as of last week.

Other calves, showed the same symptoms, but once I gave them the miracle drug micotil, they all popped back.

As of yesterday, dry feed intake had almost completely ceased, he was up to 1.5lbs of dry feed a day, now he at .1lb if lucky. He also stopped voluntarily drinking the milk replacer, I had to tube him. He's become more lethargic than usual and started grinding his teeth. This is when I really started to get worried. I've been consulting the vet overseeing the project, but I figured it would be good to get others opinions. So what's everyone think?

Possibly because it's against forum rules and this thread will be locked shortly.

Ok, then lock it, I figured a roundtable talk about if would be a good discussion

The whole rash thing doesn't sound nearly as fun to discuss, maybe why I'm applying for vet school and not med school.

Well you should hang around and talk about that. That's what this forum is for, you know. And we'd love to help you there. 😀

I want to go to vet school cause I hate people! Except you, of course.

Maybe you could try a few more antibiotics without any sort of culture or diagnostics whatsoever so whenever a new resistant superbug emerges from this poor calf, you'll be sure it's a real whopper.

Your asking pre-vet and vet students. We all know varying degrees of nothing, essentially. And having one roundtable discussion opens the door for every other person online with a sick animal...

If you want to discuss it somewhere, discuss it on vin.

And I also agree with SilverSpyderGT and Breenie
