Anyone know the inside scoop on UCSF vs. Stanford vs. UCLA?

I've heard repeated comments that many of the residents at all of those programs aren't the happiest in the world--even if it's California!! Can anyone going to school out west throw in their two cents?

Thanks, and good luck with everything!

If you want to train at the place with the most famous and influential faculty, go to UCSF. A couple of examples of the department's accomplishments:

1) MAC, plus most of the work regarding the uptake and physiologic effects of inhalational anesthetics

2) Desflurane

3) ABG analysis, specifically the pCO2 electrode

4) CPAP

5) Vecuronium

6) Authors/editors of the many influential textbooks, journals, chapters, etc, etc, etc...

7) A massive amount of anesthesia research, if you choose to pursue such a path

Most grads still go into private practice since this is a large program. As for an academic career, well everyone on this forum can figure it out for themselves. I can tell you firsthand, it is not in any way malignant or overwhelming if you have a brain and passion for what you do. The alumni network is vast and when you finish you will always have the stamp of UCSF Anesthesia no matter what you end up doing. BTW-- most of the famous people still give anesthesia on a regular basis, which means you get to work with them and learn from them firsthand!
