I've been scheming, even while I'm dreaming,
on how to plant my seeds in,
Philadelphia...
California...
is where I get my shelta,
PENN's 3000 miles away so I called Delta,
but no furniture on board unless you write a mega-
check, with lots of zero's down the strip,
turned to movers.com to seal the money drip
my stuff weighs less than Anna Nicole Smith's left hip,
but the costs are still elaborate when you're wallet's anorexic
this is not a rhyming thread, trying to keep it animated
to keep all you California-to-Philly migrants interested

Hey guys & gals,
I know many of us Californians attending PENN or Temple this August are all in the same boat as far as moving is concerned. We're all trying to find the most economical, quickest, & smoothest way to cross the 3000 mile distance between 2 points on a U.S. map. I thought of a U-haul trailer (only $200) but I find 3 hours of driving torturous so I cant even imagine 52 hours in the seated position. I contacted a moving company (123movers) to quote me a price for moving my stuff. The price is reasonable if I was taking the roof & walls of my house with me but the net weight of my stuff is less than 300 lbs.
If anybody interested in sharing weight & costs for a moving company, we could all pool our money together & share space. Even if you're stuff weighs more than mine I dont mind splitting the costs down the line. Or if anyone out there has a better moving strategy, my eyes are wide open😱.
Thanks

How did you get a quote for 200 dollars from Uhaul?
I am moving from St. Louis to NY and a 15' truck is costing me 550 from budget. Uhaul was more expensive...

Yo Diddy!

I too am considering moving my stuff to Philly from Cali. I am also Penn bound. I might just leave my stuff here and buy some cheap ikea furniture... don't know yet. Anyway, what are some of the quotes that these moving companies have sent you? I am curious. Thx

Yay!! I knew there would be more PENN 007 students lurking these forums in an incognito fashion. Diddy and I welcome you!

We're gonna have a blast.

PS: Why haven't you posted yet on the PENN thread. :hardy:

Hello,

I live in OC and am moving to Philly as well...attending Temple! 🙂

My move...I have a lot of stuff. Basically for a 2-bedroom apartment load full....it will cost me $2100 for movers. I know this is very steep but the price includes....gas, taxes, full loading and unloading and they pack everything for me.

I figured if I had to buy a bed, other furniture, TV, etc. I figured that I would still have to fork over $2000. I am not bringing my car so buying furniture and all the other stuff in Philly would be difficult unless it gets delivered for free (yeah right).

What do you guys think?

shane

Shane:

I think you are doing a wise thing. However, make sure they are insured and you have their quote in writing and signed just to make sure everything is legit. Also, make a list of everything you have and it wouldn't hurt to take pictures of the stuff inside the truck. That way, if this company tries to mess with your head you have some ammo.

I believe you and your family are moving down. I'm expecting to spend around 2000 bucks furnishing my studio.

Good luck,

DesiDentist

Hey Beagle, lil mix up. For $200 bucks @Uhaul, you get a TRAILOR, not a truck. You'll need a truck to tow it. A TRUCK from U-haul from cali to philly would cost me $2000(not including gas).
So Shane, $2100 for everything is a steal especially if the loading & packing is thrown in. Desi is right-on with his wordz of caution, take a picture of all your stuff before & after its all packed in the truck just in case you end having to go see Judge Judy. Make sure the weight of all you're stuff is verified by the movers & documented before its put into truck. I wish you the best at Temple!👍

unagio07,
Its good to finally talk to a fellow Cali PENN pal. To get your quote, go to 123movers.com & they list bunch of moving companies. Westcoast Movers sent me a quote for $700 & American Movers for $600. I should've asked what range of weight is within those prices. Keep in mind, they quote based on weight, not amount of space occupied. So, it'll cost more to ship a 50 lb. barbell than to ship 30 pillows. My stuff is so lightweight that those numbers dont even make sense. Hence the existence of this thread to see what different people's moving strategy is or see if someone want to pool money together & share moving costs. Unagi, got to post on Penn thread, Penn is the school that loves you back😍! Whereabout in Cali are you? I've got 1 more week to go at UCR & then the PARTY DON'T STOP(right Desi?)....Halleluyah:horns:!

Thanks for the info Diddy, I'll let you know if I decide to ship my furniture as well. Perhaps we could split the cost. Alright, I shall post in the UPenn thread as Desi and Diddy suggested. Laters.

Thanks for your extra input. I think taking pictures is a great idea as well. So far I have 2 quotes and they all include insurance for scratches and things like that. My main concern was with the electronics since sometimes they may get shifted and not work once all is said and done. They offered insurance for an extra $170 or so that will insure up to $10k in belongings. I definitely don't have anywhere near that amount but it still may be worth considering.

Hopefully all the Penn and Temple incoming freshmen can meet up before classes. Am I the only female here?

Thanks for the extra tips Desidentist!

shane

Hey shane,

Nope...you're not the only female......I am one as well....going to temple dental 🙂

Where are you living?

"Hopefully all the Penn and Temple incoming freshmen can meet up before classes"- Shane

Definitely, I couldnt agree more. Both schools are a $6 cab ride away & when will we get the chance to know each other once the schools get in full swing? All of us being from Cali might even end up working together as dentists in future especially if we plan on coming back to here to practice. So, I think we should start partying in Cali & continue the celebration all the way to Philly:hardy:! Any suggestions?

XC199,

I will most likely live in the art museum area. The suburbs scared me a bit. It's a little too woodsy and isolated for me. I went apt. shopping last month found a small place that I'm going to take at the end of July. What about you?

If we don't all have a chance to meet (I'll be away from So. Cal for the summer), we should at least meet up the first weekend before school starts in philly.

When do all of you Penn freshmen start? I believe Temple's orientation is August 20th.

shane

shane,

I will probably end up living in East falls. An upperclassman had contacted me about an apartment over there that's actually not too pricey. Is the art museum area near center city? have you familiarized yourself with the public transportation around philly yet?

xc1999

I was raised in Los Angeles, now I'm in Riverside @UCR.

I believe Penn orientation is 08/16.

If we cant all see eye-to-eye in the west, its at least cool to say waz up on the internet. Just looking to network, maybe pick up on some moving tips.

Do any of you plan on coming back to Cali to practice? I have a feeling I'm going to love the snow too much. I need a break from all this sun, thongs, & palm trees(ughhmm... Ok, maybe not the thongs 😎 !)

i do plan on coming back to the bay area to practice, but who knows what might happen after 4 years, maybe i'd fall in love with the east coast and stay there forever~

I know a cosmetic dentist in Beverly Hills that went to Penn. His office is in the miracle mile on Wilshire Blvd. Do any of you guys know of any other Penn/Temple graduates practicing out here?

Hey I did that last year... FROM CA TO PHILLY... I drove there w/ one of my friend... We left from the Bay Area so we hit Reno, Salt Lake City, Yellowstone, Mt Rushmore, Chicago, Minnapolis (spelling?) and St. Paul...(maybe somewhere else but I can't recall) it was great and a ton of fun... we stayed in Philly for a week but then my friend got into UCLA and dropped me off in NYC and drove back to Ca by himself 🙂
Good luck on moving 🙂 Make sure you go to the Beach or just soak up some sun before you get here 🙂

Hey StarGirl,

Do you remeber how long it took you to go ocean to ocean?

i think we did 9 or 10 days...and spent a week in Philly and bought a ton of furniture and stuff and ended up returning everything 🙂 It was a ton of fun... totally worth it...wish I can do it again 🙂

I did the same thing too!...hey stargirl...remember running into each other at ikea! =o) wasn't that cool! hehehe
