I hear that Ca is hell as a resident getting in to med school. Is this correct?

What can I do to increase my chances? I would LOVE to stay in my home state but I am willing to go elsewhere.

This is correct. Of all the states, CA has the largest number of qualified applicants, and as such, it's the biggest net exporter of medical students. UCLA grads alone could fill every MD school seat in the state.

Your best chances to stay in CA are as follows: Western, Touro-CA, Loma Linda (but look at their list of don'ts), UCR (IF you're from the Inland Empire) UCD, UCI, UCR, and then lastly, the titans of Keck, UCSD, UCLA, UCSF and Stanford.

Under no circumstances can I recommend CNU.

What do you do to increase your chances? Evidence of commitment to community, research, and academic excellence.

Just out of curiosity, what is problematic with CNU? I'm not very familiar with the program.

For profit MD school; questionable practices, especially refusing to do what needed to let their students get gov't loans. Their LizzyM score is at the bottom of all private MD schools. See the wise @gyngyn's comments on this school as well.

This is good to know; thank you
