If you apply to a state school in California for their MD/PhD program but you are from out of state, and you get rejected from the program, do they still consider you for MD only? Are you given any preference even though you are out of state?

Thanks.

like md/phd programs in any other state, it is highly program-dependent

Only UCSF has a less obvious preference for in-state applicants. The class at UCSD is 80-90% Californian, so...🙁

given that you are no longer possibly funded by the NIH after rejection from MSTP, i imagine you become subject to the same residency considerations as any other MD-only applicant, since the state helps fund the school. just a guess.

only 3 of the 12 from this year's class are from California.

premeddick was asking about their MD class. UCSD openly says their MD class is aimed at 80+% Californian.

PS: if you are a 1st yr MD/PhD at UCSF, I probably have met you during my interview 🙂

Hey all,

I am going to hijack my own thread and ask a follow up to my initial question... If I get into UCSD for the MD/PhD does anyone know if I can choose to just do the MD and not the PhD? Does anyone know about UCSF?

Thanks,

Sorry if this is annoying.🙂🙂:luck::luck:

I know this question is kinda early considering that I won't be applying before next year, but do you know whether UC Davis accepts international students into their MD PhD program? Because if I got that right (and pls. correct me if I'm wrong) it is not an MSTP program, so the uni has to provide the funding anyways and not the NIH , right?

I can't find any info on whether they accept intl. students on their website so any info of that kind would be appreciated 😀 Thx!

I don't believe any UC aacepts internationals for MSTP, but I could be wrong.

premeddick, you can drop out before the PhD phase, and don't have to repay for the first two years. But you have to pay for your last two years. There's no way to get a 100% free MD without doing the PhD, and it's against the intention of the program anyway.

Yeah of course, that would probably be unethical too. But is it possible if I get an acceptance letter to call the school and say, "I am interested in getting an MD at this point, but not the PhD. I will pay for it all myself." Would they go for that? Is that something possible?
