Currently an MS3 looking into path. I'll be doing a 4 week path elective at home as my last block of MS3

I'm looking at California for various reasons. Just wanted to see if any residents could give me some feedback on programs to look into in that state for both residency application and away elective

My eye is on dermpath ultimately, but realizing its ungodly competitive and according to some of my attending-mentors....boring 🙂...its not really a deal breaker for me if thing don't go that way. Path has quite a bit to offer, and I want to see it all at this point.

If its relevant my Step 1 score is 257, MS1-2 grades are all HP/H, and third year clerkships thus far are H/HP and one P

And I'm a New Yorker (I know that makes it harder) but for personal and family reasons wish to relocate to Cali.

thank you!

UCLA is a good place to do an away elective, especially if you want a good exposure to dermpath. You may have to be a little flexible in your dates if you want to be on the dermpath service for part or all of your elective, but otherwise it shouldnt be a problem. If you are interested, get in contact with Anetta Pierro, the department secretary (you can find her contact info on the online UCLA directory) and have her guide you.

BTW, Dermpath is anything but boring, especially inflammatory dermpath, but I may be biased 🙂

thank you so much for the reply

I will look into UCLA 🙂

other california programs with a dermpath fellowship are ucsf and stanford... consider also/instead doing a general surg path, or even a clinical derm rotation at these places. your numbers are great... may as well just match into derm, unless you don't think that you're pretty enough.

Thank you for the vote of confidence

I actually love path, love skin pathology in particular (GI too) and would prefer to be on the diagnostic side of things, hence was never interested in being a dermatologist, but rather a derm path

The Maltese thinks I'm pretty enough I guess haha 🙂
