Hi everyone,

I am a California resident considered to be "not competetive" for California schools. I had a friend tell me that some out of state schools specialize in admitting California residents to their programs. Is this true and if so what schools might they be. I have a 3.25 and really just want to go anywhere in the US, maybe even Canada or Mexico. THanks

I've never heard of a school "specializing" in admitting students from Cali but many schools take out of state (OOS) students especially those that are private. Do a search for the "school selector" spread sheet and u can put ur stats in and ur state and it will give u an idea of ur chances.

No school 'specializes' in taking students from a certain state, with the exception of that state's public, and to a lesser extent, private med schools.

Look at each school's 10th percentiles in sGPA and cGPA. At the very least you'll know that someone got into the school with your numbers.

*edit: Dang, beaten to the punch.

Where can I find the schools 10th% admittance numbers?

In the School Selection Spreadsheet stickied to the top of the What Are My Chances forum.

We can't help you unless we know your MCAT score. But no matter what it is, with a 3.25 (and that too from Cali), you have almost zero chance of getting into any US MD school.

You may be a great candidate for DO school however, if you have a 32+ on the MCAT.

right now I have a 29 mcat, retaking in sept. I also kind of have an upward trend (3.5 freshman 2.6 sophomore year 3.1 junior, 3.8 senior) with a 3.6 in my engineering classes and 2.5 in humanities and electives.

Right now I'm graduating in a month and will take 1-2 years off to strengthem my app by continuing research and adding volunteer hours etc. I'm hoping that I can improve my practice test MCAT score average 1-2pts and get a 35+ on the MCAT, but if it's not in that range by late august, I will take the mcat in january.

I donno about this. If you are planning on MD, I would use those 1-2 years toward SMP. A 3.25 is REALLY tough to get over for US MD entrance.

If you are planning on DO though, then a year of 4.0 postbac should pull your GPA to like 3.4, and even with a 29 MCAT, you are a great candidate for DO.
