I'm an MSII that is seriously considering FP despite all of the nay sayers out there (my parents included). I do have one question for all of you practicing docs out there - what are some options when it comes to call schedules? Is it possible to have NO call whatsoever? What are your call sch's like? Any insight would be appreciated!

Infinite possibilities.

I'm in a 9-person call group, so I'm only on once every nine weekdays and once every nine weekends. Call is phone triage only, since we don't admit. Call volume is pretty light, too, so it doesn't really get in the way of whatever you had planned. It's easy to switch with someone if you really need to be off. Can't complain.

The practices that I know of where the doctors never take call have some sort of nurse or midlevel coverage for after-hours phone calls.

When it comes time to look for a practice to work or buy or etc. look closely at the hospital and other FP in the area.

Check to see if there is a hospitalist team that takes all your admits. See if you can join a call group so you don't have to be on call all the time.

I know FP's that have call every 5th night and I know many that don't ever see the inside of a hospital. They give all their admits to hospitalist.

don't listen to all the negative talk out there.

If you like fP and are ok with what they get paid then fp is for you. If you don't like either aspect then look around and see what best for YOU.

This kind of talk always goes on in medical school. In the end you have to be happy.
