if you get an interview invite will they usually tell you how to respond (like email vs. phone)? If given the choice is it better to just call? if they don't mention that you can call to confirm an interview is it poor form to call?

Also--and this might be a question without an answer--what time of day do most east coast programs send out invites. I'm doing an away in SF in oct, so if programs on the east send out invites at 8a EST, that = 5a Pacific!! I would hate to wake up at 7 and miss out on interviews because I was snoozing

Personally, I would only call if i were called first or if the email explicitly states that they want to be called. Program coordinators are busy people, and they're pretty quick at responding to emails and usually are very nice and polite over email in my experience so far. Not to mention they prob would've just sent out the offer to 20+ people in addition to you, and I think it's easier to deal with 20 emails at once rather than 20 phone calls 😉

As far as time of day for offers, I know that Georgia wrote me at 10am eastern. The two Rochester posters on the interview thread didn't post til the afternoon, so I assume they prob didn't get them too early in the AM. Since those two programs are the only two out yet, perhaps looking at last years thread or talking to an applicant from last year will be more helpful, but I wouldn't be too worried about waking up at 5am to check your email this early in the season

yeah thanks. As for calling I definitely prefer not to annoy the coordinator. I also think emailing is the fairer/easier way to do it since they can take your interview preferences in the order you respond. Plus, most people are in rotations and can't necessarily step out and call (but we can subtly send an email 😉). I just remember a thread from years past where a former applicant recommended calling to schedule an interview. I really wouldn't have thought to do it unless I read that thread, but I think I"ll stick with emailing.
