First of all, thanks for all the helpful commentary on SDN. As some cheeseballs say on NPR, I'm a "long time listener, first time caller."

Anyhoo, anyone get a call from your MGH panel interview chair? I got one and I'm not sure what to make of it. Wondering if its just part of this silly game. Anyone else feel like Michael Douglas in "The Game?" You can never be sure what's real and what is absolute BS.

yeah I got one,

seemed to be exactly what they said, a chance to ask questions. I thought it was cool, but very unexpected. I wouldn't read into it.

It seems like a way to recruit, or at least that was what was implied to me. I highly doubt they are making calls to all 400+ people who interviewed there.

Yeah I got one too. Didn't really know what to say as I didn't have any additional questions.

Some of my friends who applied there a few years ago got those calls (and some didn't). From their perspective, they felt like the calls were an attempt to show interest AND find out glimpses of how you were planning to rank them. MGH doesn't like to go down too far on their list..Calls are a great way of helping to construct a match list that is sound without blatantly disobeying the rules.

What's the deal with not wanting to go 'too far down your list?"

No one would ever know how far down they went unless the PD said something right?

You'd be surprised about the pride and energy that goes into matching exactly who they want....

yeah, i definitely got the impression they were plumbing the depths, so to speak. she seemed to take quite an interest in my telling her that i planned to rank them highly. i like souljah's interpretation--seemed to fit.

i did not get a call from my chair. does that mean i am unlikely to match there? not that it would break my heart, but i was thinking of ranking them first. i prolly will anyway, but i would like to prepared for rejection. i hate this stuff.

who knows rosving. this is such a poker game--everyone wants everyone else to think that they have the best hand. like poker though, nothing will matter until the cards are shown are 3/19.

just keep in mind that just by getting an interview there you are WAY ahead of the game.

wouldn't read too much into the call -- i believe some panels were doing this routinely
