A friend of mine is looking to match into Texas for Psych, and I'm curious myself, honestly. He and I were thinking about Austin specifically. The two I've found in Austin are Dell and Austin State. Anyone know much about these programs? Are they competitive? What about the other programs in Texas? Thanks for any help. It's greatly appreciated!

I've posted reviews of my interview experiences at the TX/Southern programs (among others) in the 2015-2016 Interview Review thread and am happy to answer questions you have about specific programs via PM. Re: Dell - as of right now my assessment is that it'd be a great place to practice at (excellent pay as far as I can tell, which is drawing young as well as experienced Psychiatrists from across the country to a fun and vibrant city) but not necessarily train at just yet. There's a lot of startup-mentality in their promotional stuff/how they present themselves that rubbed me the wrong way, but it's a cushy gig as far as residencies go and no, it's not competitive by Psych standards and not even in the state of TX.

One bit of advice about (some) Texas programs: look at their current resident lists, as you may discover certain *ahem* trends.

Edit: I'd actually recommend this for all programs you're looking into.

^^If half a class is FMG, okay maybe that's a red flag, but I'd say if a program keeps a few of its own every year, draws other residents from across the country (or at least region), it's perfectly fine if they have a couple FMG, if that's what you're getting at.

I'm starting at BCM this summer but I cannot disagree with a thing OHS said about UTSW, it's a fantastic program. BCM and UTSW usually swap a few medical students each year for Psych residencies and both groups seem very happy with their decision but also have heaps of praise for the other.

It seems like you have had a grudge with this program for a while (look at the post history) and I'm sorry to hear it, but you're misrepresenting an excellent, supportive program with a favorable national reputation on a forum meant to provide constructive advice for people in the middle of big life decisions. I know quite a lot about this program and the city of Houston already, so if anybody has questions feel free to PM me. I'm not interested in getting into a debate about this - you have an agenda and I have self-interest now that I've matched so this will go nowhere. FWIW if you or anybody else wants to know about all of the "options" I had, you can search my post history. I've never lacked for opportunity and I chose the program that was the best fit for me of those available.
