Hi everyone,
I was just wondering if DOs can practice medicine in another country, like when they travel on a medical mission to South America or Asia.

Thanks

You can do a search and see whether DOs can practice in the country where you would like to travel to eventually.

Yes. Doctors Without Borders/MSF takes DOs and I think they operate in countries that normally don't recognize the DO degree/practice rights.

That being said there are current restrictions in many European countries, including the UK I believe. This is largely based on the fact that they have what are called osteopaths which are similar to chiropractors. So there would be a huge confusion if american DO's set up practice.

Hopefully that will change in the coming years though

You are wrong. Did you make any attempt at all to research this information?

Seems that DO's have unlimited practice rights in the UK.

All I care about is to have a full practice rights in potential countries I may move to: UK (some family members live there), Saudi Arabia (native country), Mexico (my wife's family), and Australia (I love Kangaroos).

Hi, thanks for everyone's input. I'm still a tad confused since it seems like people have different answers. My main concern is whether I can volunteer overseas for Doctors without Borders or other nonprofit organizations as a DO.

Thanks

Then go with my answer. DWB/MSF takes DOs. Check their website.

This made me laugh. Also, do you have kids? If so are they trilingual? That would be pretty cool. Not many people speak Spanish, Arabic, and English.

Yup, my son is fluent in all three languages

Yes this is correct. DWB works independently of the countries practicing rights. Pretty much all countries allow DWBs and DWB WILL accept Osteopathic Physicians. So you have nothing to worry about.

Your question was answered. DOs can practice with aid organizations in pretty much any country that MDs practice with.

That said, if you actually want to practice privately outside of NGOs or aid groups like Doctors Without Borders, then you would not only be subject to whatever visa or citizenship is necessary in that country, but you would also be subject to any applicable examinations and their medical licensing body, which may or may not recognize the DO degree.

Again though, DOs have no problem practicing with aid organizations in any county that MDs do so.

Full practice rights in Germany and Austria, the only foreign countries (besides the obvious Canada) that I'd want to go to, so I'm good 🙂

Hi there,

DOs cannot practice in Saudi Arabia as of 2016.

Im a DO ophthalmologist boarded by the AOBO. I was in saudi pracicing for a large hospital chain for a year on a temporary license. Eventually my license was denied because the saudi health authorities did not recognize DO qualifications. It caused much confusion and pain. You can reach me for further clarification.

Why would an ophthalmologist make an account to necrobump an old post to answer a question.

I wonder if that's because of you being a DO vs an AOA trained physician. My guess is the latter.

Preposterous that any foreign country would not recognize a credentialed and clean record possessing American DO or MD. Purely politically based if they don't recognize osteopathic physicians and to heck with them quite frankly.

- an individual with ties to a country that does not recognize my future degree, but takes in doctors from failed states with an MD.
