I'm doing a PGY1 Gen Surg prelim and will be reapplying next year to something.

If I were to apply for an advanced position that would require program specific PGY1 requirements (i.e. ICU or EM) could night float count towards that or does it have to be written into the RRC plan for my program?

ACGME Definition said:
Night Float: Rotation or educational experience designed to either eliminate in-house call or to assist other residents during the night. Residents assigned to night float are assigned on-site duty during evening/night shifts and are responsible for admitting or cross-covering patients until morning and do not have daytime assignments. Rotation must have an educational focus.

I've read lots of comments about it being combined in some places with ICU or EM but nothing that says it specifically fulfills requirement X of residency.

Interesting. In IM it counts as an intern floor month and an supervisor month, of which you have to have 6 during your internship, and 6 more as a supervisor. I guess I kind of assumed surg was the same.

It is often combined with another month because it is frequently done in 2 week blocks.

As far as "counting" towards prelim requirements, it counts as IM training time -- so if your specialty board requires 12 months of prelim with at least 4 months of IM time, it would count towards those 4 months.
